I first saw this film for my birthday in 1957. The present Blu Ray is an excellent transfer of the film, both for sound and picture. The account of the British prisoners building a railway for the Japanese has clearly been "softened, " as the actual event is one tainted by incredible brutality by the Japanese. The closest David Lean comes to showing real brutality is Alec Guiness' incarceration in a small metal hut for days in the blazing sun. What follows is a somewhat odd transformation- Guiness becomes obsessed with building the bridge to the highest British standards, and on schedule! Clearly, that is behavior that is contrary to the expected refusal of the prisoners to aid and abet their captor. But, it's only a film, and not a documentary, though some veterans of that horrendous experience have voiced their displeasure in how the event was portrayed. More recent films have come closer to the truth. William Holden has a somewhat comedic role in the film, though he meets his end with aplomb.
As a lover of Lean films, it's still a grand show of sorts, and worth the time to enjoy it.

First class production that stands up remarkably well for its age. Solid story and performances, but it falls short of David Lean's masterpiece - Lawrence of Arabia - which hit the screens just five years later. You can certainly see telltale signs of Lean's early genius.

The story is fine, the only reason I want to watch this movie because of Bill Holden.

The movie, itself, is excellent (5 stars). The seller listed this as "New", however, I disagree. While it came shrink-wrapped, it was the softer plastic and not the crinkly stuff. There was no sealing tape on the edge of the clamshell. Finally, there were 2 small smudges on the disk, itself. I was able to carefully clean off the smudges and the disk played fine. I buy only New and expect something listed that way to be New...and not Used--Excellent. So, this rating is really for the seller.

They used the same source film made originally for DVD. The Blu-ray version adds just a little. Definitely not worth buying if you already own the DVD.

I have returned two copies of this BluRay due to loud clicks and pops in the audio track. The video is more than acceptable although not "stunning", but the DTS audio is surprisingly defective. This was the case on two different top of the line Pioneer Elite BluRay players. I would not recommend this purchase until a new pressing is available.

This motion picture, like most war films is fictitous. The building of a bridge over the river Kwai presented a group of captured British soldiers merrily working on this project. Notice none of them seem overly concerned that they are p-o-w's. Bill Holden, freshly shaved and tanned does his bit. Not all that good.
