Review

An extraordinary new voice in country music, 18-year-old Mary Sarah unites modern and traditional country styles with her stunning new album, Bridges!

Features an awe-inspiring list of country music s brightest stars performing duets with Sarah, including Dolly Parton singing her superb hit Jolene, Willie Nelson crooning the all-time classic Crazy, the late Ray Price counting Heartaches By The Number, Merle Haggard trading vocals on The Fightin Side Of Me and a whole lot more!

This exceptional young lady has already made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry in April of this year, will be featured in Billboard magazine s Artists on the Verge column as well as Country Weekly s Who s New, and is set to join The Oak Ridge Boys for a series of live shows! --Press Release

Bette Midler sang “You’ve gotta have friends………………..” But when this 19 year old country singer who honestly – I have never heard of before this CD arrived for review – say shehas “friends”, she means it. This are country music legends who don’t even need last names (though, unlike some hip-hop performers, they do have them). When I say Loretta, Willie, Tanya, Merle, Lynn, Ronnie, Vince and Ray, you know who I mean. The only “friend” you might have a problem with is “Neil”. No it’s not McCoy (he spells his name Neal) and this Neil is not country. It’s Neil Sedaka, who joins Mary Sarah on the only non-country song among the 10 tracks that form the “core album”. When did “Where The Boys Are” become country? There are really 13 tracks on the 44-minute album with the last three (including one with Big & Rich, One with the album’s Executive Producer and a solo on Brenda Lee’s hit, “I’m Sorry”

Mary Sarah has some voice and she replicates the legendary ladies of classic country nearly note for note. Whether it’s Patsy, Dolly, Loretta, Tanya or Tammy (again, you know who I’m referring to). What’ll be really interesting is to watch for her follow-up album with songs we can’t all sing by heart. The voice is there; the future will be in her not being a “cover act” for female classic country singers. I’m pulling for her.

The six-page color foldout inside the jewel box has photos of MS with her friends , a track list, the musicians on each of the three sessions (where groups of three or four of the tracks were laid down) and TWO pages of “thank you”’s in minuscule type face. The one thing that is missing – in my opinion – is a bio of MS. Honestly I still don’t know much about her (I guess I could co to her website) but I do like what I’m hearing here.

One last comment.

It is normal for a new singer to begin with an album of their own; even those who start as part of a duo, group or band usually start with a solo album when they first break away. I can't think of a precedent where a newcomer records a selection of songs with a whole series of star guests. The only solo track is I'm sorry, the old Brenda Lee classic, but given what else is here, I wonder if the original intention was that Brenda Lee would join in too. Brenda is alive and well despite fake rumors to the contrary, which is the important thing, but she isn't here.

So we get 12 duets and one solo track, although some of the guests feature more prominently than others. Another curiosity is the inclusion of Neil Sedaka (writer of Where the boys are) rather than Connie Francis (who, like Brenda Lee, is alive and well despite fake rumors to the contrary) but Neil does a great job, modifying the lyrics he sings appropriately.

I was surprised to find that she had chosen The fighting side of me from all Merle Haggard's vast selection of songs. I found out that Mary Sarah had been performing it in concert, and that her fans love it, so fair enough. As with Willie Nelson and Ray Price, Merle's voice is past its peak, but still holding up remarkably well. Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker and Lynn Anderson are still in great form too. The only slight disappointment is that I couldn't hear Vince Gill clearly.

Mary Sarah is a fantastic singer, but where does her career go next? I look forward to finding out.

This 19-year singer Mary Sarah has grown into such an amazing singer with her vocals and not to mention that track after track she nails it. Mary Sarah will continue to grow and be successful as an artist. One that is for sure to be remembered for years to come. I'm excited for this young girls future.

Congrats to Mary Sarah!! It is refreshing when a young artist embraces the foundations of the music she chooses to perform. This very talented young woman gives me confidence that style of Country music that I love will be honored and carried into the future by the next generation of stars which Mary Sarah is sure to be. Do yourself a favor. Buy this CD and realize the future of real country music is as bright as the star that will be singing it, Mary Sarah!!!

Rushed to get this album after hearing Mary Sarah audition for "The Voice". She sang "Where the Boys Are". Four chair turn! Holy Moly! Not suprising. The duets are seamless. Will look forward to what this artist does in the future!

Wife likes it, her sister loves it. She is a very young new singer who hooked up with many other stars to record this album. The music is variety of types, oldies and country. She does have a good voice and in time will even get better. It is worth giving a listen to will be fun to see how far she goes. Mary Sarah does have talent, only time will tell if others find it.

I'm delighted with this CD. Mary Sarah is the real deal in classic country. She's very young but the fact that so many country 'legends' have teamed up with her on duets on this CD is testament to her legitimacy as a country singer. Highly recommended.
