In 1963, Stephen Hawking contracted motor neurone disease and was given two years to live. Yet he went on to Cambridge to become a brilliant researcher and Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. He held the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge, the chair held by Isaac Newton in 1663, for thirty years. Professor Hawking has over a dozen honorary degrees, was awarded the CBE in 1982. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a Member of the US National Academy of Science.

I imagine it's hard to write about such complicated material as the laws of physics, but Hawking does a great job of making it about as understandable as it can be. That said, this is still a rather dense book that takes a good amount of focus to comprehend (and even then, following Hawking's explanations and comprehending the laws of physics are not the same thing). What's great about it is that the book allows readers to have an intellectual interchange with the information. Much of physics is indefinite, and Hawking has no delusions about the fact that there is an astronomical amount of knowledge still to be discovered about the universe, so readers can easily interact with the text, asking questions and making comments and thinking through concepts. Readers are invited to think critically about the concepts, because who's to say that some average Joe or Jane couldn't have a stroke of inspiration, an thought that could start a path to a new discovery about the universe? Hawking's book is great because it goes a long way towards making some of the most complicated concepts accessible to anyone who's willing to think about them.

Also, Hawking is able to adeptly toe the line between science and religion, finding a balance that considers both sides, and making it easy to see how the two can coincide. Because they can, right? If we let them?

It helps us understand in truly easy to understand language the origins of the universe and how it all works. I have found that even as a believing Christian the insights and wisdom are helpful without expressly denying my belief in a creator God. It does lead one to think carefully and diligently about the bigger questions of life which I think is good for us all.

Hawking was a giant not just for his intellect but how he could explain so much to so many. Guys like Neil Tyson are small in Hawking's very big shadow.
