Turns out I needn't have worried. Vocally, Ted is somewhere between Nick D'Virgilio (low notes) and Daniel Gildenlow of Pain of Salvation (high notes). The music is the all-over-the-place, sometimes playful, sometimes serious Spock's Beard material that I know and love. And, to be honest, I thought the two songs cowritten by Neal Morse (Afterthoughts and Waiting for Me) would be my favorites, just because, well, it's Neal! Writing for SB! What's not to love? But they're probably my least favorite of the 7 songs. Don't get me wrong; they're still fantastic, but the other songs really shine, even the Ted-penned Submerged.
I do miss Neal's vocals, and to a lesser degree, Nick's, but I think Ted is more than capable of filling their shoes. As for the drums, Jimmy Keegan has been their touring drummer for a very long time, and his chops are first rate. No detectable difference in playing there. All good.
All in all, I'll be looping this one in my iPod, along with Steven Wilson's The Raven That Refused to Sing, for a very long time. Good work, Beardlings!
