What a saviour this generator was then. I did the 5 hr oil change and as others have mentioned, it was ready for it. I used SAE 10W-30 and now am sticking with SAE 5W-30 fully sythetic to keep it running since the 50hr oil change. 75hrs of use since de-gumming and we have power for heat (little power needed for gas furnace), fridge/freezer, occassional coffee maker or microwave, two sumps running only very occassionally, TV and DVR (power went out but still had FIOS!), internet and some lights plus a couple lines to two neighbors. We were also helped by having gas hot water, gas fire place and gas hob. I used two outlets and gave one outlet to each neighbor, so I ran the house on 20 amps and they had up to 10 amps each for essentials. My main suprise was how well the generator conserved gas. We would run for about 4 hrs in the morning and then about 5 hrs in the evening. The generator used 2.5 to 3 gallons a day. It sounds like I was running a lot, but I think we were only at max of half power most of the time. This was great given the gas shortages.
After some normality returns, I will store this generator better and do a carburetor/fuel line service. Even with mistreatment early on, this generator has got my family and two neighbors through a tough week with some degree of comfort. Highly recommended and worth ponying up for the 6KW constant/7.5KW surge limit version B&S.
I hardwired an outlet into the electrical panel, interlock switch and all. Within 1 week we lost power for 4 hours. I had the house up and running in less than 10 minutes and this unit powered all of our single pole power plus well pump as expected. The only time you even noticed it was on the generator was when the well pump initially turned on which caused a light flicker.
It arrived in less than a week and was pretty easy to put together; it even comes with a quart of oil. I added the oil, put in some fresh gas and followed the cold starting instructions and it fired up with 2 easy pulls of the starting cord. The unit has an extendable handle and wheels that make it very easy to move from storage and get it into action quickly. This allows me to keep it out of the way until I need it. As far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with this Briggs and Stratton generator. One thing I would stress is although it has rubber outlet covers this is not an all-weather model so you should be careful about operating it in rainy weather.
Knowing what you want to keep running will help ensure you don't get too big or too small a unit so it's a good idea to understand what your power requirements really are before starting your search and it's not too difficult a task. Also, remember that you will need one or more HEAVY DUTY extension cords to get the power into the house.
Bottom Line: This is a good generator that will provides the power I need where I need it.
