What you will get with this tripe, is a quick easy read (the only thing saving it from a one star rating) with magic[k] rules that are constantly changing. In one moment the sword has power, and in the next it doesn't have that power. In one moment the evil omnipotent people of the world can easily find and attack the heorine, and in the next they can't. Mix this in with ridiculous refernces to time shifting, polymorphing, and bathroom jokes, and you have a story that's been changed into a historical piece that should be flushed down the toilet.
The plot entails a twelve year old girl trying to save the world from the big bad all-powerful evil organizaiton known as the Merchantry. She has some companions who require that you suspend your disblief long enough to believe that their really speaking such dialogue let alone suspend your disbelief on their ability to help this girl. In fact, if you've read one fantasy story on the chosen savior of humanity suddenly being found, then you don't need to read this nonsense.
There is a line from the "Let's Make Up and Be Friendly" album by The Bonzo Dog Band wherein a witness says "For God's Sake!! Throw in the kitchen sink", and the narrator, Vivian Stanshall, goes on to say "There was a terrific splash, and the sink landed in the driveway. In a moment, Jeremy was beside it, turning the limp faucet in his hands . . "
Terry Kroenung throws in every Thing imaginable into this Young Adult book - though I must confess I am age 54 and loved every "Perils of Pauline" minute of it.
Laundry List: Kroenung challenges the readers in the Introduction to recognize and come up with perhaps other influences on the story: Okay, obvious: Tom Sawyer, Moby Dick, Hitchhikers' Guide to The Galaxy, Monty Python, Joseph Campbell. Not so obvious: The Golden Bough, Mythperceptions, Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung.

Cut to the chase: This is a blast-a-minute story of a young girl who suddenly has revealed to her that she is the Savior of the World, in the middle of the American Civil War, in a Supernatural sense. And oh, by the way, we get to meet Moby Dick, himself, the whale, as a slave to Powers Undefined. Tah Dah! She has to make The Hero's Journey through the South of East Virginia to find a Pirate Ship to bear her forward in her Quest.
Anyone who was entertained by "Harry Potter" would do well to stop here as well -
The story has violence, mystery, call-backs to known history, violence, questing, Jungian Archetypes, violence, great stupid characters (Oh, I am a sucker for talking (not so bright)
) magic swords, intelligent rats, shape-shifting parrots,and.. .
THE INEVITABLE SEQUEL!!
Oh, yeah, Kroenung promises that this is only one in a series, and he has to make good.
Okay, buddy - Bring it ONNNN!!!~!
The book made me laugh, tear up a bit, and, of course, it left me on an edge a few times, but THANK GOD there was another chapter that followed. Verity is not your "average" twelve-year-old and the helped me, at points, hop into her shoes (she does not wear any shoes :) and become that adventurer! Along with the help from her friends, Verity goes on a adventure one can only dream of! With bullies and more and more bullies the story continues to grow! I cannot wait for the next adventure with Jasper and Verity! Thanks Mr. K! --Taylor M. (Block 7)
