When Sting embarked on his solo career, he didn't throw his tenure with the Police out the window; on this live double album from his Dream of the Blue Turtles tour, he reworks some odd selections from his old band's catalog in the expansive, jazz-inflected style of his new crew (which included saxophonist Branford Marsalis). These performances emphasize showmanship (solos, backup singers, and all) and they've got lots of crowd-pleasing moments, like the overwhelming swell of "I Burn for You" and a Caribbean clap-along on a medley of "One World" and "Love Is the Seventh Wave." But Sting's raw-steak voice has been affected by his band, too, and his phrasing on the quieter torch songs draws cleverly on jazz traditions. --Douglas Wolk

Sting's Underrated Live Album

Back in the days of compact discs, this was one of my go-to pieces of musical bliss. As a huge fan of The Police and Sting's early solo music, "Bring On The Night" was one of my favorite albums to play (via cassette tape) on my long car commute to college.

The performance of Sting and his new band at the time was quite good. I must admit that it took getting used to Sting's new band, at first. But the apprehension was pushed aside on "Dream of the Blue Turtles" and "Bring On The Night." This is a stellar combination of musicians and singers.

I enjoy most of the songs, even the long ones that clock in over ten minutes. There are hidden gems, including my favorite, "I Burn For You." "Another Day" and "Down So Long" are additional not-so-well known songs that Sting performs so well on this album.

My only complaint is that this double CD set might not be the remastered version. It came in a brand new shrink wrapped twin CD holder with brand new inserts and booklet. However, the sound quality is very similar to the original CD set I bought way back in 1986. No punch. Not "loud." Clarity is only okay. I have "The Police: Live!" CD from 1995 and the sound quality on that obliterates the sound quality on this CD set.

The copyright on the outer package says 1986 and does not list "2006." Misleading Amazon posting. Recommended if there isn't a remastered version available because the songs and performance are still incredible to hear.

Sting started out as a fusion bassist, so this jazz flavored live set was not as weird as it first seemed. In retrospect, his only mistake was switching to guitar instead of bass and giving that slot to someone else. His playing got buried among the virtuoso musicians around him. His vocals were excellent, however. The mix of reworked Police songs and numbers from Dream Of The Blue Turtles worked well. We Work The Black Seam has always been a personal favorite. I found Bring On The Night as an expensive import double LP over 20 years ago. Upgrading to CD was actually less pricey than the original album.

Want to add my enthusiasm to what's already been posted here about Sting's live Bring on the Night CD. I first saw this live concert on a neighbor's VCR in about 1987 and was entranced by the music. So it was in the back of my mind to purchase it on cd and/or dvd at some point. It is the best live concert I have ever heard along with Sade's live concert in San Diego from 1985, and Bryan Duncan's nehosoul band more recently (which I found on youtube). Music just doesn't get much better than this unless it also happens to be gospel! I haven't listened to both discs yet because I haven't gotten passed listening to Bring on the Night over and over when I need something enjoyable and relaxing to listen to. Yes, relaxing because the harmonizing goes on and on for over eleven minutes and one starts memorizing the harmonies. I don't think any group of back up singers has ever had more fun than Sting's with this song. Donnabellasdigest.com

One of the best live albums from its era. Sting brings together an incredible team to showcase his (at that time) new solo album and some Police classics reinterpreted. Today these songs and variations are familiar, but they were new and exciting at the time and this album captures the electricity.

The vinyl album I received is in like new condition. Sleeve shows the wear described by seller. Arrived earlier than promised. Thanks!

Just a little warning for those of you that are looking to buy the remastered version. I just bought this cd a month ago. The purchase was for a brand new, remastered version of "Bring on the Night". Without telling me, the cd I received was NOT the remastered version but a new copy of the original 1986 version. Sting's production has always been better than average, and the cd I got sounds pretty good, so I'll keep it rather than bother with returning it. You can tell if the cd is remastered or the original version by looking at the bottom of the back cover and on the inside edge of the cd itself. If in both those areas it makes reference to a copyright date of 1986, you have the old version, not the remastered version. Remastered versions of any cd will make reference to a new/updated production date and copyright date (usually) sometime from 1995 to 2016.

If you are a Sting fan this set is a treat. Dropped into select stores in the US shortly after the release of The Dream of the Blue Turtles and a Companion peace to a video of the same name it catches Sting and a Great Backing band in action. Not a string of hit songs on this one but a few known album tracks and some rare gems round out the set. The CDs were remastered in the 90's I believe but not too the extent that one should turn down an original copy. A Good album to have on had but not essential. Worth checking out.
