How to tackle the problem of poverty

"Bringing in the Sheaves" dates from the late 1980s. In it, George Grant presents his vision for the church and private charity can deal with our nation's poverty. For years Grant was a pastor of a church in Humble, Texas, and his experience dealing with the poor in the community provided a microcosm of the programs that actually work to get the poor back on their feet. "Bringing in the Sheaves" presents a strong argument for why the church in particular and the private sector in general is better able to make productive citizens of those in poverty than is the civil government. That the church has not done this is not due to any inherent weakness in the church but is a result of a lack of willingness of many Christians to make the necessary sacrifices to tackle the problem.

"Bringing in the Sheaves," which was published nearly three decades ago, is still relevant today. In it, George Grant presents his vision for how the church in particular and private charity in general can deal with the problem of poverty in our nation. At the time Grant was pastor of a church in Humble, Texas that practiced what Grant preaches in this book. That experience provided in a microcosmic way the sorts of programs that Grant envisions would work against poverty. Grant presents a convincing argument for why the private sector, and in particular the church, is potentially far better equipped to take those who are in poverty and make them productive citizens than is the public sector. After reading this book I came away convinced of the viability of what Grant is proposing. The problem, of course, is, even as it was back then, the willingness of Christians to get involved and to make the necessary sacrifices of time and resources to bring this about.

Vital Reading

This is a vital work for faithful Christianity today. This book needs to be updated with current statistics and data, and implemented immediately by every Christian family and local church. Prove that you are truly a Christian assembly (James 1:27). May God give us tender hearts, humble and willing to minister to those "below" us.

and that Jesus loved the wealthy and hated the poor

Quite an achievement. Grant manages to take the Gospels and turn them into an excuse for ignoring the needs of our neighbors. While Jesus condemns wealth more often than He speaks of sin, Grant simply ignores the New Testament and goes plumbing through the Old Testament to find condemnations of "sluggards". If you believe that charity harms people, and that Jesus loved the wealthy and hated the poor, this is the book for you.

One of the best books I've read about how to help the American people... full of facts and well documented. If you are inspired by truth... it's a "must read."
