Product Description

Brinmar SBUHD (#0421A) Universal-Fit Air Conditioner Compressor Sound Blanket for Most Compressors up to 60,000 BTU This is our most versatile, best-selling Brinmar sound blanket because of its universal fit with such a wide range of scroll and reciprocating compressors. Sold in a convenient, easy-to-ship carton, these sound blankets are easy to keep stocked on your shelves or in your van, or convenient for the homeowner to order and quickly get installed! All air conditioners, to some degree, are designed to minimize the sound they make. However, many home owners find the noise levels objectionable and greater than anticipated, after the installation is complete. The location of a condensing unit can significantly influence the perceived noise level. When you double the distance between you and the air conditioner, you decrease the sound by 5 dB, which is about ¼ as loud. While manufacturers do guarantee the sound levels of their equipment they can't guarantee the perceived noise level from patios, windows and bedrooms. Brinmar Sound Blankets are a popular solution for reducing compressor noise, from air conditioners or heat pumps. They are guaranteed to reduce noise levels to meet or exceed local noise laws and are compatible with all residential compressors. Brinmar Sound Blankets reduce compressor noise by 5 dB or more - a substantial 40% + reduction. The sound blanket fits inside the cabinet and wraps around the compressor - the noisiest component of an air conditioner or heat pump. Brinmar's universal design accommodates hundreds of different styles and shapes of compressors. The two-piece design allows quick installation in tight cabinets where space is a consideration and where the compressor is close to the coil or the fan. The sound blanket is securely attached with hook and loop closures, which are durable and make installation quick and efficient. Fits Bristol, Carlyle, Copeland, Tecumseh and more Model SBUHD, # 0421A, Protech # 68-25217-10

I just installed this on a Goodman compressor that has gotten very loud in recent years. I'm pleased with the results and thought I'd make a video showing before and after effects.

I must admit I was a skeptic when I first viewed this item, however since my compressor unit is located on the side of my house about 15 feet from my neighbors house it tended to amplify the noise off the houses due to its location. Having a "scroll type" compressor it only exacerbated the noise factor, late at night when I walk my dog..I could hear my compressor unit from 150' with its distinct annoying sound. During the day no matter where you are on my property you could hear its distinct sound. Like I said, I was a skeptic that anything as simple as a blanket wrap would make any difference but since I had nothing to loose I figured why not try it.

I installed the unit myself which took about 10min(not recommended unless you are mechanically inclined) upon switching the unit back on I was utterly AMAZED ! I am still in shock at how quiet my compressor unit has become. The only sound that now emanates from it is the fan, I am astounded and pleased beyond belief. This sound blanket has BY FAR exceeded my expectations. I find myself walking over towards the unit to see if its actually operating since its so darn quiet. Its truly a night and day difference. Highly recommended to anyone with a unit that is too noisy or in a bad location (ie patio)....So glad I decided to do this, it has worked out wonderfully

I have an old Payne A/C compressor outside, and it was really loud. The neighbors never said a word about the noise, but the thing is so loud that I was always felt bad about turning on the A/C. This sound blanket from Brinmar really does help to reduce the sound coming from the compressor. My completely unscientific observation is that this product has reduced the noise by at least half. It's not whisper quiet by any means, and it's still louder than one of the high-end Trane units. Nonetheless, it is a huge improvement from before, and I feel the result you get for the price of the product is worth it. Keep in mind that if you have an older compressor, the fan is probably responsible for a fair amount of noise as well (which this product can't help you with). But, the compressor is the worst offender for sure - so wrap it up with this sound blanket.

Installation is not too hard, if you are somewhat handy. Just remove the fan from the top of your outside A/C compressor and wrap up the compressor inside (looks like a little torpedo). Secure the sound blanket with the built in velcro straps. The instructions recommend you duct tape the whole thing to seal the holes, but that was difficult for me to do because of the tight space inside. I wasn't willing to remove the whole coil just to duct tape the sound blanket, so I don't have a 100% sealed installation. Even so, the noise from the compressor is reduced by at least half. Make sure to wear a mask while handling this product, because the sound blanket is filled with fiberglass insulation. And while you're at it, tighten up all the nuts and bolts on your outside unit.

I've had this for a few months now, I must say it really works but your mileage may vary. If you have a loud unit I would not hesitate trying this product. The first time I put it on it didn't work well, but I took it off and trimmed around a pipe on the bottom so the blanket went as far to the ground as possible, big difference! This is not a simple install job where you just toss it on and call it a day, you have to work at getting all the holes plugged where the sound would emanate from. I highly suggest you buy a few larger zip ties and once satisfied with the fit, zip tie it tight as the Velcro is not going to hold it as well. I estimate it cut the noise down 65%. Before all I could hear is a buzzing sound, now you hear the fan but not in a bad way. First time I cranked it up I thought my compressor did not come on, that's how much better it became. After doing a lot of research on the web I learned that many units come from the factory with a blanket on the compressor and they enclose them in a separate space of the unit further making it quiet. Why only 4 stars? I thought the directions were not as helpful as they could have been. I've seen zero difference in the cooler ability of my unit and I live in S Fla.

What a tremendous difference both inside and out! If you view the before/after video be sure you jack your volume ALL the way up. Nothing else will do the difference justice.

A word on installation....I am pretty handy, willing and able to tackle almost anything, but after thinking things over I thought discretion might be the better part of valor on this project and called my HVAC contractor to do the job. Glad I did.

After you lift the fan top you have to figure how to prop it up while you work inside the unit. (My installer had me do that for him.) It is a long way down to the bottom of the unit. You must reach over the side and bend down inside the unit to do the job. Maybe it's my height (5'9") or my age (71), but I would not have fancied myself for the task. It only took him 20 minutes, so I guess it really isn't THAT tough of a job. Of course, I had a few years on him. ;-)
