A short history of the docks is followed by sections providing information and history about what can be seen and something of what can no longer be seen and there is a lot more of that now, in fact the recent changes just add to the atmosphere conjured up by the author.
Of interest are items on The Cumberland Basin, Merchants Road, Avon Crescent, Underfall Yard, Baltic Wharf, Albion Yard, SS Great Britain, Wapping Wharf, Prince’s Wharf, Prince Street Bridge, Bathurst Basin, Midland Wharf to Redcliffe Bridge to Welsh Back, Bristol Bridge, Castle Park, King Street, Castle Park, St Augustine’s Reach, Canon’s Marsh, Mardyke Wharf to Cumberland Basin, The Hotwell Spa and Clifton Suspension Bridge.
This book is an easy read and will give the reader an insight into times gone by and will definitely leave them looking at those vistas of the harbour that they thought they knew so well with new eyes.
I challenge you to walk around the modern day harbour with the book in hand and not say “Well, I didn’t know that”.
