Though I enjoy reading Alt History tales set in Michigan, this one didn't quite do it for me. It was very well written, all details and events and histories very much thought out, but, I don't know, I felt kind of dropped in the middle of things. I didn't know who to love or hate, though the antagonist who begins and ends the story made me shift in my seat a bit. I didn't have that emotional rollercoaster ride I got with WEST MICHIGAN RISING. Not that I need thrills and chills every step of the way. I just need something that anchored me to the story and cast of characters that, unfortunately, I just didn't get out of this one.
Entertained: yes. Intelligent, exceptional writing: yes. Completely satisfied: no. Interested in other Alt History tales by this talented writer: hell yes.
Like many short stories I've liked, this one left me wanting more. I feel like I got through the opening act of a larger story, but it stands alone. even if no follow-ups are planned. You must definitely give it a read if you're from the West Michigan area since there's some nice little geographical nods sprinkled in too. I'll be reading more of Slater's work.
