After doing extensive research on rear-facing infant car seats, we narrowed down our choices to the Britax Chaperone and the Chicco KeyFit. Honestly, both are great seats that are very safe and easy to use. In the end though, we decided to go with the Britax Chaperone in red. Here are a few of my thoughts:

1. This is definitely a large car seat, but I feel that the size is justified. With additional safety features like true side impact protection in the seat and the anti-rebound bar on the base, it helps put us at ease that we've picked a car seat that goes above and beyond the minimum standards for child seat safety. It weighs about a pound or so more than the Chicco, but realistically a car seat + growing infant is going to be heavy regardless. Save yourself some trouble and potentially some medical bills and only carry car seats when really necessary (and don't use them inappropriately, such as putting them on elevator surfaces or shopping carts!). Otherwise, use a stroller, infant carrier, etc. whenever possible. It's just not that great for you to carry any car seat around for an extended period of time.

2. This is one good-looking car seat. The red and black combination is absolutely eye-catching, especially when combined with a matching stroller like the Britax B-Ready Stroller 2012, Red.

3. It's very easy to snap in and out of the car seat base, as well as the matching stroller. Press one giant button on the back of the seat and lift up for easy removal from your vehicle. The Chaperone also comes with attachments that allows you to hook it up to a stroller like the B-Ready, so don't lose those! Once the attachments are installed, you never need to detach or re-attach them.

This car seat is great. It's very highly rated for safety, and it's well made. We bought an extra base, so it's super easy to go from Mom's car to Dad's car. We also use it with the snap n go stroller, so we don't have to wake baby when leaving the car.
This is our second Britax infant car seat, because my older child was sitting in hers (older model) when we were in an accident. Another car hit us from behind. My daughter didn't even notice (until she heard Mommy panic). The car seat was in perfect condition (as far as I could see), but we replaced it as is recommended for accidents. It kept my daughter safe, the most important thing a car seat should do.

We went with this seat because it has an anti-rebound bar, and seemed to be the best quality of the available choices. I've heard Britax stopped using flame retardants on the fabric in 2013, so that was also a positive feature. For a car seat this expensive, it could have been designed to have a way to hold the straps out of the way while putting the child in the seat. Also, the harness straps don't pull out very far--at their maximum extension they get maybe an inch longer than they'll be when you tighten them. It's very challenging to put even a small baby in because of this. The bonnet doesn't come far enough forward to really block the sun, and it doesn't reliably stay up when you're carrying it. We don't spend a lot of time driving, and we don't use this with any stroller--but we did take it in and out of the car with a sleeping infant in it more than we expected to. It's heavy, but that's not our main use of it, so even with a now-16-pound child it isn't that big of a deal. The materials do seem to be very good quality, and have held up well (though we've only been using it 6 months). It's very long (just barely fits in a our wagon, with two 5'9-10" adults' seats very upright and as far forward as is reasonable/safe), so make sure to have your seat installation inspected before committing to this one. Couldn't fit a Britax marathon next to it, had to put both seats in the outboard positions when transporting a friend's child. As with any seat, it's recommend to have it inspected by an expert once installed in a new vehicle--we read the instructions (and car manual) very carefully and have a lot of experience with other car seats and still screwed it up. Hospitals, fire and EMS, and healthcare system sometimes offer free inspections with a CPST.

We got this because it appears to be one of the safest car seats on the market. (Neurotic first time parents.) We haven't tested it in a crash yet, so I can't speak to that. But, this thing is heavy. I haven't compared it to other car seats, so it may not make that big of a difference. But with a baby and attendant clothes and stuff, it weighs probably over thirty pounds. Luggable, but not easily. Also, it's fairly long. It fits in the middle seat of my '01 Subaru outback, but it's snug. It fits fine in our '04 Grand Cherokee, however.

So, this is not for small people without muscles or people with tiny cars.

I also assume that every car seat does this as well, but you can strip this thing down to clean it out. We had to do so after a poo-splosion on one trip. The only thing that doesn't come off are the straps, which are anchored to the seat. But after taking all the other fabric off, some Oxi-Clean spray and a hose did the trick just fine.

If you're planning getting a Baby Jogger brand stroller, the adapters work but are difficult to get locked in place. It's a relatively minor hassle. But it's a hassle.
