Product Description

The versatile British Berkefeld system is the ideal system for use at home with small or medium sized families, travel, outdoor activities or during unexpected emergencies. This powerful system filters both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. Perfect for outdoor activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available. The system comes complete with four 7" ceramic elements. This system has a storage capacity of about 2.1 gallons and when in use it stands 19.25" in height with a diameter of 8.5". The upper chamber nests within the lower chamber for transport and stands only 13" in height. The system will filter about 25 to 30 Gallons (95-115 liters) per day.

I use about a gallon of water a day and I know this because I use to buy filtered water either in new containers or refilling five gallon water bottles. I did not want a water filter that I had to plumb in under the sink or anything that I would have to attach to the water faucet. When I researched the ceramic filter with the carbon center and the impregnated silver and the number of gallons of city tap water that this unit would process ~ 6,000 gallons! ~ I calculated that I would break even, at one dollar a gallon at the store, in less than one year. Added to this, the first set of filters will last well into ten years. Being conservative, and assuming I use only 300 gallons a year that is 3,000 less plastic containers going into land fills, thousands of dollars saved, 24,000 pounds of water I do not have to carry from the grocery store to my home ~ water weights 8 pounds per gallon ~ and who knows what else. I fill it up at night and have water all day. I am proud to own something that really is GREEN and that makes my life so much easier and my carbon footprint so much smaller. Highly, highly recommended. OK, one con: It takes up precious counter space if you have a small place. A small price to pay for such a wonderful, simple, valuable convenience.

We've had our Big Berkey for 10 years now and I appreciate it more all the time. One thing I did not realize is the ceramic filters last virtually forever and I bought a box of them -- totally unnecessary. We use it to make the water taste better, but it's a relief knowing we will have good water even after a hurricane or if there is a boil water alert. It's easy to fill, plus, there's no plastic bottle waste, no lifting cases of water from the store. The only possible negative is you do have to wait for the gravity feed to filter the water if you have just filled it. I think that is more than off-set by the positives.

We had a new pump house erected last year, and as a result, the surrounding soil was disturbed. That, coupled with rains and flooding this spring, resulted in incredibly brown, dirty water. I'd had a Berkey on my list for at least two years by then, so I decided there was no time like the present to get one!

At first, the filtration speeds were dismally slow, but after a good scrubbing with a Scotch pad, things sped up markedly. The big deal, though, was the way the brown stuff I put in looked after it went through. It was CLEAR! Not only was it clear and sparkling, like water should be, but also delicious. I don't know that I've ever tasted better water, and that stuff we put in was nasty before it came out the other end of the Berkey.

Fast forward a few months, and we no longer drink any other water than what comes from the Berkey. We pack the stuff with us wherever we go. Other than scrubbing the filters down once a month or so, we haven't had to do anything with it. It just works. For me, that part makes it well worth the price tag.

So, if you're looking for a water filter that will actually clean your water, this is the way to go. The only thing I would do differently is opt for the black filters instead, because they are supposed to also remove heavy metals.

When considering a Berkey look at the different capabilities of the black (more expensive) filters as compared to the ceramic ones. If you are concerned about heavy metals, ceramic does not filter them. The Berky enterprise is fragmented among different entities and they do not point this difference out and do not provide side by side comparisons of the two filters. The Berkey Filters website does not even MENTION the ceramic filters, only the black one. "James Filters" website has the ceramic ones. James Enterprises in Pueblo, CO is I thinks the overall company for all the the Berkey variations.
This is so confusing and undermined my confidence in this choice I made (ceramic). Customer service said they would exchange the filters so now I need to decide and deal with that hassle.

Why have they evolved into this Byzantine set up escapes me.

So look carefully at both filters before deciding.

Yes, the British Berkfeld Water Purifying Systems are used throughout the World by Red Cross, and missionaries and people living in areas where water purity poses dangers to health. This system works perfectly by filtering out 99.9% of ALL pathogens, cysts, lead and other minerals detrimental to health. It will even filter colored water or mud ! You can't beat this filter, and at a reasonable price. Arrived quickly, and packed really good, and best of all at a great price. I have used this Big Berkey for over 2yrs and don't regret it, am extremely satisfied and may buy another soon so I have more water faster. Thank you so much for a great product !!

After many hours of on-line searching, my wife advised me that this promised to be the best water filter available to consumers. So, we purchased it and immediately started using it. Although our city's water has been tested as being either the worst or among the worst public water supplies in the nation, the British Berkefeld more than lived up to our expectations. Our water tastes great, just like it used to taste when I was a kid and our city had one of the purest water supplies in the nation. It filters out just about everything that is wrong with our water, except for the fluoride that the city insists on putting in there. The four ceramic water filters are easy to remove for cleaning and are easy to clean and re-insert. The containers are well-constructed and don't take up too much counter space. The one inconvenience is that it does not come with a stand, which it needs in order to elevate the unit high enough to put a water glass under the faucet. Therefore, we turned a stainless steel dutch oven upside down and placed the unit on top of it---problem solved, and, our improvised stand looks as through it is part of the original unit. We enthusiastically recommend this product!
