Editorial Reviews

Throughout the twentieth century, Royal Weddings were events of majestic splendour. People would camp out overnight in the streets of London to get a prime location for the procession the next day. They would gather in their thousands to garner a glimpse of the newly married couple on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Street parties were held up and down the country in celebration - the extravagance, the splendour, the sheer pomp and pageantry all combined to make for extraordinary scenes of patriotic pride and national unity. In this collection we relive all the major Royal Weddings of the Twentieth Century, seeing them just as the cinema audiences of the time would have experienced them. Join us in a comprehensive and nostalgic look back at some of the most memorable and extraordinary days, in not just royal history, but in the history of Britain.

This set was somewhat disappointing. While it includes a great deal of rare footage from royal weddings from this century, more emphasis is on the older weddings in very grainy black & white footage. The current royal wedding are also covered (no, you won't see William & Catherine's big day in this set, a huge disappointment). The footage is a collection of Pathe documentaries with substandard clarity. The color editions are terrible! You can't see the details of the wedding gowns, the transfer from tape is so bad. I have seen better looking footage from a National Geographic documentary that was crystal clear, even with footage from the mid-sixties weddings. You can barely see the details of Princess Diana's famous gown. Only Sarah Ferguson's gown is clearly seen. While this edition is great for history buffs, I do wish the production team would have taken the time to clean up the horribly grainy footage for clarity and included more coverage of the wedding of Charles & Diana. I can understand the grainy status of the early 1900 weddings, but I have seen much clearer footage of Princess Elizabeth's wedding in 1947. A very disappointing documentary.

We'll admit - we caught a pretty severe case of "Royal Wedding Fever" around the time of the famed nuptials. We're old enough to remember when some of the other "royals" tied the knot, and we thought it'd be fun to see if the DVD matched or exceeded our memories. "Back in the day," events like these were not given the extreme coverage they are today. So, even as it was nice to once again see the weddings of Princess Margaret, Anne, etc., there were even more details and footage than we could remember seeing during the original event. The producers of these tapes really combed the archives for some great footage. There are weddings that go back to the 20s, and it is interesting to see that - even though the royals really stick to tradition - even they make changes with the times.

I was enthralled watching royal weddings covering an 80-year period from Princess Patricia of Connaught's wedding in 1919 to Prince Edward's in 1999. There were the weddings you'd expect: Princess Elizabeth (now Queen) and Prince Philip, Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, Princess Anne and Mark Phillips, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. It was the more obscure royal weddings that I found utterly enchanting. I'd never dreamed I would see video of the 1934 wedding of the Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece. That was the last time a foreign princess married into the British Royal family. Princess Elizabeth made the sweetest bridesmaid. It was wonderful seeing the Royals generation after generation gathering on the balcony at Buckingham Palace after a royal wedding. This video has everything: the sumptuous gowns, the sparkling jewels, the crowds sleeping on the pavement, the coaches complete with uniformed footmen! You won't regret purchasing this historical video. I plan to watch it again and again.

These news clips, ranging from 1919 to 1999, are wonderful and leave the viewer wanting more. In fact, there is no way this program could have been long enough to satisfy me. Why, for example, was Patricia Mountbatten's wedding not included? Her sister Pamela's is. If we can see the Mary-Harewood engagement, why not other engagement announcements? Even the earliest clip, from February 1919, short and dark as it is, is riveting. The bride, Princess Patricia, is a ghostly figure in white fur, her face indistinct; but I thought I saw her sister smile for half a second!

When I read the blurb I thought I'd like to see the royal weddings before those of the current royals for the dresses, pomp and history, but this compilation was very poorly made. A continuous narration would have been an inexpensive vehicle instead of barely readable signs preceeding each wedding. A really big improvement would have been "remastered" footage instead of the jumpy and fuzzy old footage.
