The trick in bringing off this work is the casting, because you need very
accomplished singers who can put over the script with the vivacity
of a team used to Restoration comedy and the like. The dialogue needs
to be as interesting as the music, and this cast does very well in that
regard. Some Beggar's Opera performances get away with actors in at
least some of the roles, but this version by Benjamin Britten makes
greater demands than most others. This really is the beggar's *opera*--
music theatre above all. Chandos is more or less obsessed with Opera
in English, so it's amusing to see them record this work, which already
is in English. Those who don't like hearing spoken dialogue on discs
should be warned: there's lots of talking. But the words are a treat even
so. Pretend it's Congreve.
