The first day at school; whether it be elementary or secondary, it was always a mixture of excitement, anticipation, and anxiety. In Charlie’s case, anxiety weighs a bit more because of his irascible, irritant mother who keeps complaining how exorbitant the school uniform is. He is specifically warned not to even make a tear in his expensive uniform!
Following the frenzy about school preparation, the magical vibe quickly swept in once Charlie arrived at school; looming ahead of him is an entry with a wooden door, which, funnily enough, Charlie’s supportive brother Alex fails to see but is clearly visible to Charlie’s eyes. Little did he know — did I know — it WAS indeed the entrance to Brittle’s Academy, a school of magic!
The tiny veins of imaginary and magic marbling throughout this book enchanted me the entire time I was reading this. The school yard high up in the sky, flying horses, trial after trial to identify the pupils’ attributes to better sort them into appropriate Houses…
This may sound reminiscent of the sorting hat in the Harry Potter series, but it’s totally a different experience and I enjoyed everything Charlie went through in this book.
As there is only 110 pages in this book, a bit of chaotic, magical day wraps up pretty quickly which saddened me a little bit. The excitement and tribulation upon the first day of school were beautifully and nicely blended into the story and had me revisit my first day at school after all these years!
The ending did feel a bit abrupt but brought me a huge grin to my face and left me with anticipation for what’s about to come in the sequels.
I also wished there had been a bit more illustrations accompanying the story. Although they are beautifully illustrated and served really well as an aid to visualise the magical world, but there were too few in my personal opinion. I loved them so much that I simply wanted more!
Despite my tiny niggles, Brittle’s Academy for Magically Unstable, the first book in the new series proved itself to be a sparkling introduction filled to the brim with magic, imaginary and enchantment.
This book is basically for kids aged over 6, but adults can certainly enjoy this book as well! If you need a quick fix to your fantasy craving, pick up this book. I have a feeling you’ll end up wanting more though!

Brittle’s Academy for the Magically Unstable is the first book in a series for middle grade readers. This book does need to be read before the other books in the series because it’s the beginning of Charlie’s life as a magical student. It’s about his first day at secondary school where he finds out he’s in Professor Brittle’s class…in the sky.
This is a quick read and kept my interest throughout. Charlie is already nervous about his first day and then crazy things start happening. By the end of the day, he’s learned a lot but still has many questions. The writing is easy to follow but the descriptions are still good. I could picture the children walking in the clouds to their school.
I definitely recommend Brittle’s Academy for the Magically Unstable for middle grade readers. As an adult, I enjoyed it as well.
This is a middle grade novel that I think can be enjoyed by anyone. Lily Mae Walters does an amazing job of creating this world. I felt enchanted and captivated by the imagery.
This is only 110 pages, but I felt like there was a great story here. It ended a bit ubruptly, but with the knowledge that there is more to come, that was okay with me.
As I said, this book is fun for all ages, in my opinion. I recommend giving it a read.
