This wonderful book brings back memories and helps to add to our knowledge of the past. I recommend the book to others who didn't have the privilege of spending time in Broad Channel to help them understand the diversity of the Big Apple's many small neighborhoods.
The steeplechase building still stood dormant, there were bars like Noonan's that famously leaned to one side onto the adjacent building. The Milk Farm was still in business and watching boat races under the train trestle was a summer tradition.
Broad Channel has always been independent in nature, mostly by sheer necessity. That spirit remains today.
This book is a great read for not only people who are familiar with the neighborhood that is often overlooked as nothing more than a 20 block stretch of Crossbay Boulevard that you must drive through to get to Rockaway Beach, but is also great for anyone with an interest in New York history. The photos and writings bring the little island's past to life.
pictures of scenes long gone.
