In this witty warm-hearted adventure, they experienced some of Ireland’s quirkier history while sharing universally relatable stories of maniacal school coaches, neurotic neighbors, and tiger moms. Having kicked that empty nest into their rearview mirror, the sisters took off careening down the wrong side of the road, making questionable choices, getting trapped in a medieval tower, sneaking Chinese take-out into a famous cooking school, drinking way too much, and gaining a changed perspective on their lives ahead.

The Book:
When sisters, Deborah & Nancy, discovered that motherhood was a temp job they resolved to run away from home. After packing up that last kid for college, and facing their suddenly silent homes, they decided to leave the country. 2 Broads Abroad: Moms Fly the Coop is a funny, irreverent, occasionally poignant travel tale of their impulsive and ill-planned road trip around Ireland.
Leaving their husbands, their dogs, their responsibilities, and their houses behind, they flew off to experience fairytale castles, abandoned ruins, and verdant hillsides, along with whimsical hoteliers, eccentric Irish history, engaging locals, unanticipated dangers, one little ghost, and every pub with an "Open" sign.
Channeling their own Irish heritage they provoke laughter in the midst of nostalgia, as they careen down the wrong side of Ireland's country roads reminiscing about maniacal school coaches, tiger moms, and neurotic neighbors.
Deborah and Nancy bring their journey and their sisterly bond to life in this is a fast-paced, funny, and charming read.
"Travel is a bit like waking up."

After the last of their children is off to college, both women find themselves at sea without the relentless schedules they pursued for 20 years!
Somewhat relieved, but uncomfortably free, they are both experiencing the "empty" in their "nests".
They need to blast out of their ennui and into a new way of life. Why not do it together? And what better way to challenge their California lifestyles than a road trip in Ireland?
So it begins- a journey of discovery on the wrong side of the road through glorious landscapes, twisting roads, cozy pubs, castles, real and imagined and a cooking school that gives literal meaning to the phrase "fly by night".
The book is a good balance of a meaty travelogue and an honest reflection of mothers coming to grips with the end of their jobs as daily caregivers. Their observations about themselves and their families are funny and endearing- we should all have such caring and sensitive moms who mourn our leave taking with depth and understanding. But don't think for a moment this is a boo-hoo tale of self-pity!
These gals are sassy, head strong and pretty fearless. They brave new territories at the wheel of a rental car with the driver's seat on the wrong side and get themselves in and out of scrapes both physical and cultural with Yankee ingenuity and "mommy-know-how"!
Nancy and Deborah are different enough to add some uncertainty to how they'll get along and navigate inevitable travel troubles. But their general good humor, garden variety neuroses and ultimately their love for each other prevail so mishaps become great fodder for great stores to share with family, friends and us--the lucky readers--so Dearie, get in the back seat, pop a Guinness (because Deborah is driving) buckle up and off you go!
PS- Both gals have great husbands who support their trip, miss them and have the decency to buy new underwear when the clean ones run out!
the line where the husband was pouting about being alone and wondering what to do, man up dude! The book is a very good read.
It's an uplifting read, and the perfect size for holiday travels.
I laughed and I cried, well done. I highly recommend this book.
