Anyone who likes Broadway can't afford to pass up this gem. The songs are, for the most part, digitally remastered from the original DECCA Broadway LPs.
Although I have some of the older DECCA LPs as well as some of the more recent original cast recordings, none compare with the quality and the absolute thrill of hearing such legends as Alfred Drake, Gertrude Lawrence, John Raitt, Ethel Merman, Bobby Van and others, as well as some of today's Broadway stars, such as Bernadette Peters, Betty Buckley, etc., all doing what they did/do best: singing.
This compilation is a true masterpiece of modern technology; it brings both the greats of the past and the present together on one spectacular CD.

If copywriters for recording companies were held by the Truth in Advertising laws, most would be out of a job. Now make no mistake, the collection that Decca calls <Broadway's Greatest Love Songs> (314 541 096-2) is not at all a bad collection of 20 love songs from as many Broadway shows; and it does what I always like such collections to do--give us the original singers where possible. But whether these are the GREATEST love songs is certainly a disputable question.
Certainly the selections from "Oklahoma!" "Carousel," "Guys & Dolls," and "The King and I" are all standards by any touchstone and are as "great" as any Broadway show tune is going to get. When we start to get into the forgettable "melodies" (to stretch the term to include any logical sequence of notes) as those from "Miss Saigon" and "Victor/Victoria," even the adjective Adequate would be overly generous.
"There's a Small Hotel" is a terrific song, "Dulcinea" not bad at all, but by comparison with these the selection from "Carnival" seems meretricious indeed. "Suddenly, Seymour" from "Little Shop of Horrors" is a welcome spoof...and so on. But not to beat a butterfly with a sledgehammer, this is a pleasant repackaging of Broadway Love Songs and a nice little gift for Valentine's Day or an anniversary or what you will.
And if you like this sort of thing, take a look for RCA Victor's "Broadway in Love" that will give you a nice companion album to this one.

I must admit, I bought this primarily for Adam Pascal's rendition of "Seasons of Love" from my favorite musical Rent. Can you imagine how delighted I was to discover I enjoyed the entire cd? So much so that I went out and bought the DVD version of this same title. Both are worth having if you consider yourself a true fan of Broadway.
