I enjoyed the story a great deal. Colt has a unique skill for folding children into her stories which make them even more enjoyable reads. I loved that Xavier and Estelle found each other as they were healing from individual tragedies in their lives. They forged a strong friendship even before looking to one another for physical comfort. Yet, when the physical happened it was quite sweet and very sexy. The story would have been a solid four stars but there were more than a few editing issues in the story. These minor issues didn't ruin the story for me; however, it would have been a much more seamless read had they not been present. Editing aside, Broken but Breathing is a story that I would recommend to other readers.
While trying to live again, Es joins a grief group and meets Snake. Snake becomes her support and thus begins the most unlikely of friendships and the road to redemption of life. I found myself crying, laughing, cursing and screaming as I read their story. And in the midst of all the emotional ups and downs I cheered for these two wounded but loving people. Shyla Colt has done a remarkable and outstanding job with this story and one that is worth every penny.
Estelle lost the love of her life, her unborn child and home and has been living in the darkness. Snake lost his wife and daughter to a murder and he too is in darkness. The two meet at a grief group meeting. The moments these two have where they think they might be able to live again are so touching. I had so many OMG moments and loved this book so much. I used many a tissue and loved seeing Enzo again in this book.
Broken But Breathing by Shyla Colt was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. I’m glad I read this second book in the Jinx Tattoos series.
Snake fascinated me in the first book in this series, Enzo, even though he didn’t play a huge part. There was obviously a lot more going on beyond the surface of this bad boy.
Man, was I right.
Snake and Estelle have both suffered extreme and brutal losses that broke their spirits. Having lost so much, it has taken them years to be anywhere near ready to move on but they help each other get there.
First, will you please look at this cover? Gah, it’s so sexy. I just love it.
Okay, back to the story.
The first half is a little slow but it really helps build the two main characters. You really get to know Snake and Estelle, their grief, and their fight to find a new normal. One of my favorite things was how they both changed so much because that’s what happens in real life. When something traumatic happens to you, you can’t ever go back to who you were before.
I would have liked a little more development for the rest of the members of the Motorcycle Club, but I suppose the series isn’t actually about them. Then again, there really isn’t anything about the tattoo shop either.
Also, just as I would be really getting into the flow of things there’d be an editing issue that would trip me up. Not so many that I had to stop reading or anything, but enough to be annoying. I assume the copy I received to review was the final draft, however it still needed a good and thorough proofing.
For as emotional and angsty as Broken But Breathing could be, there were bright spots of humor and hope. Even though it needs a little tightening up in the editing department, I still quite enjoyed Snake and Estelle’s story. Their broken puzzle pieces fit each other perfectly and it was satisfying to read about their Happily Ever After.
