I enjoyed the story a great deal. Colt has a unique skill for folding children into her stories which make them even more enjoyable reads. I loved that Xavier and Estelle found each other as they were healing from individual tragedies in their lives. They forged a strong friendship even before looking to one another for physical comfort. Yet, when the physical happened it was quite sweet and very sexy. The story would have been a solid four stars but there were more than a few editing issues in the story. These minor issues didn't ruin the story for me; however, it would have been a much more seamless read had they not been present. Editing aside, Broken but Breathing is a story that I would recommend to other readers.
Xavier Kolton, aka Snake, has been through dark times and is still in recovery. He attends a grief counselling group on the anniversary of the death of his wife and child to a hate crime. It is through this group that he meets Estelle and becomes her support.
Estelle is trying to retain some semblance of a life after her husband is killed after being caught in a tornado and she also loses her unborn child. She is referred to the grief group and it is here she sets eyes on the rough, tough, tattooed biker who is so different to her late husband. However she finds herself being able to speak freely with Snake and not hold anything back. In return Snake feels an affinity with Estelle and the two strike up a friendship and support of each other. It is when things take a different path between the pair when things start to heat up.
This was a different story as to what I was expecting and I thought there would have been more around the tattoo shop. However that said, I still really loved this tale of loss and recovery. As always Shyla Colt can weave a steamy and passionate story that engages the reader to devour the pages. I also loved how the relationship was believable in that the build-up was gradual and flowed towards such an intensity.
I instantly fell for Snake and I wish this was a series of the MC as I would love to learn more about the brothers of the MC. Although I liked the first book, I loved this one much more mainly for the connection between the two main characters but also for the depth of the story and the realism of the storyline. Lots of heat but also lots of heart. Fabulous. Four and a half stars.
I was given this book for an honest review.
"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."
Tragedy hits differently. It also hits in different ways. Its how you accept it and move on is always the key. Learning to breathe after you are destroyed is one of the hardest things that you will discover how to do again. That is what this book makes you realize. Even though you don't want to breathe again, you have to move on with your life and rediscover what life has to offer you. The two main characters have to do this, both struggling with holding on but wanting to live again. Trying to let go of hurt, loss, pain, and regret. How do you move on from that. Well there are stages on how they are doing this. Xavier, aka Snake, is a bit ahead of Es, but she is trying to move on after 2 years. Both of these characters were well written and you feel for both of them as their journey starts intertwining with each other. We see Xavier and Es try to move on and see the struggle it is when memories just start to pop up. I never known how people recover and move on when someone is taken from them in an instant, an instant when you can't change the outcome, and then live with it for the rest of their life. This book does that, they show you the steps, the highs and the lows and how just a little thing can make you feel strong again. I loved how two different people find a common ground, good or bad, and begin to be able to figure their life out again. This author knew how to write a book, make the reader believe that life can be good and not feel like your not suppose to be happy.
Es has lived through something that she didn't know how to recover.Read more ›
Broken But Breathing is another emotional, heartfelt book by Shyla Colt!!!! Estelle is a young woman who has suffered loss and descended into darkness many people can’t imagine. Xavier aka “Snake” has suffered the same type of loss but in a much more violent way. These are two individuals who are completely broken, but somehow are still “breathing” just not living until they meet at a grief support group. They form a friendship which eventually turns into so much more. Will these two finally find happiness again?
This was one of the most emotional books I’ve ever read! The first scene grabbed my heart, and I was literally in tears! I was right there with Estelle, and I was with her when she woke up in the hospital. OMG…that is a scene I don’t think I will ever forget. I felt the same when it was revealed about the loss Snake experienced as well, and I could completely understand his deep need for revenge! When these two broken souls meet, it’s almost like magic, even though it’s an ordinary meeting at a grief support group. It’s like their souls were waking up again, and it wasn’t insta-sex or romance. The friendship and respect they developed over time was not only special but also very realistic. It was wonderful seeing the two change and learn to love again. But, this isn’t all romance….Colt throws a twist in there that I so did not see coming! It just made the book even better!
I have only discovered Shyla Colt recently, but I’m so glad I did. She not only writes a great story, but she deals with subjects many writers might not be willing to take on, and she does it so well! She breaks down barriers and really makes you think and see things differently. Through her stories, she touches people’s lives!
