If you are after a romance story, with good character development and a bit of a different take on your normal romance novel, then I suspect you will enjoy this novel a lot.
Without changing the storyline, I think one thing which would improve this novel considerably and support this author's obvious talent is a good editor. I am not a grammar Nazi, but I just became irritated by the continual incorrect use of punctuation particularly the use of the possessive apostrophe (eg they ate their vegetable's......ahhhhh). There was also some seemingly random capitalization, and some sentences I had to reread to understand as the punctuation was odd. Finally I love words. I love using new words, however if you are going to use words that are a little less common eg alacrity - it is important to use the word correctly. I know these are minor concerns but each time I came across an obvious grammatical error, it pulled me out of the story. A good editor would enable the author to concentrate on what she does best - write creatively.
So, don't let my review put you off too much. Others have obviously enjoyed this book immensely. I found it okay, and read it to the end. I just didn't enjoy the read as much as I had hoped.
There are a few very insiteful and astute commentaries on life and love that I highlighted and even rrad them aloud to and discussed them with my 13 yr old son. He is going to read the story now because of those insights. Thank you for a great rrad!
I really felt that this was an interesting take on a post-apocalyptic world, however, I do wish there was a little more backstory regarding this world. I think what I loved about this is that this kind of turnout seemed so real - financial crisis, people living in their own clusters (or tribes), the tension between the tribes, etc.
The characters were memorable, however, it took me a minute to "get" Tom and why he seemed a bit cold.
I am looking forward to reading the next part of Broken City.
