I have the fantasy genre itself to blame for introducing foreign phrases and language. This book has some excess use and has a glossary for the terms. Each usage is a stumble in the flow of the story as I have to think about a term rather than enjoy the book.
That's just to set the scene. Without going into spoilers it turns out they are the key to a major upheaval in the governance of that Empire and, needless to say, our heroine and her husband have to play a major role in ensuring that the upheaval ends up in a positive way. The villains are a bit cliche-ed, but I think that's in large part because the dynamic of a large empire inherently produces the sorts of situation that produce this kind of villain. They are, however, quite believable as indeed are all the other characters and well described so that they don't seem one dimensional.
While I think this book could probably be read as a stand alone, it will be vastly better if read after its two predecessors.
