Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Koefod's lackluster second mystery featuring Arvo Thorson (after her 2011's Washed Up), the Mendota County, Minn., police detective spends as much time trying to figure out the women in his life as he does investigating swing bridge operator Karl Lutz's death. Fifteen-year-old daredevil Nick McQuillen happens to be on Lutz's bridge when it suddenly rises into the air. After seeing a motorcyclist make a daring leap across the spans, he goes below to find the operator cut in two by the bridge cables. While Nick's presence on the bridge makes him a suspect, his age means Thorson must deal with prickly social worker Christine Ivory, with whom the investigator has a problematic relationship. Moreover, Thorson can't quite free himself from the clutches of his adulterous ex-wife, Helen. Questioning Nick, searching for the elusive motorcyclist, and investigating the gruesome crime scene leads Thorson into a quagmire almost as sticky as his personal entanglements, but neither problem excites much interest in a novel equally weak on romance and mystery. (Sept.)

Review

"Koefod fulfills the promise of her debut novel Washed Up with this fast, fresh and smart follow-up. Broken Down is the next step in what promises to be to be a first-rate series."
- David Housewright, Edgar Award-winning author of Curse of the Jade Lily

Susan captures your attention so completely with her writing you actually feel as if you become one of her characters at the scene of the crime. I can highly recommend this book and the first in the series, "Washed Up". Eagerly anticipating another offering from Susan Koefod.

BROKEN DOWN puts our Midwestern sensibilities on the line with its plot, character development, and themes of environmental issues, personal relationships, and the river. Detective Arvo Thorson doesn't have a problem expressing himself. He can do it in just a few words, and he doesn't see a reason to use more. Though he moves to the beat of his own drum, Arvo--like everyone--has emotional ties to his past, a reflection of the town's ties to its historical swing bridge where the murder takes place. Arvo's personal life aside, his mind is restless and prone to engage in problems, sometimes obsessively, and this is what makes him a great detective in a great story.

Susan Koefod captures small town "innocence" and combines it with murder, mystery and intrigue. Just as in the first of this series ("Washed Up"), the characters come together to produce a story that keeps you wanting to read and not put down the book. What will happen to Arlo Thorson in the next one???

Koefod's follow up to her debut in the Arvo Thorson mystery series doesn't disappoint. It grabs your attention from the first pages where a teenage boy's daredevil antics balancing on the ridge of a bridge land him as a prime suspect for the murder of the swing bridge operator. The lovely and talented Christine Ivory is back, but so is Thorson's ex-wife making the detective's personal life sway dangerous out of control.

Between the murder and the relationships between the characters, I thoroughly enjoyed Broken Down. Once again Koefod's original poetic language paints the landscape around Somerset Hills with stunning clarity and her wit brings controversial local events into play. Don't miss out on this one.
