Editorial Reviews

Review

"There is something strange about Evangeline...

...I loved Evangeline's voice in this story - often snarky and darkly humorous, her strange quirks come across as real and sometimes heart-breaking... This story does a wonderful job of introducing Evangeline and has whet my appetite for further adventures." - Night Owl Paranormal

"... the beginnings of a heroine as potentially super-cool as Buffy... So long as Evangeline isn't plunged into the deepest despair, this promises to be a solid and entertaining series, based on a very enjoyable first installment."  - The Future Fire Reviews

From the Author

This is the first book of a dark paranormal/urban fantasy trilogy for grown-ups tired of perusing the YA section.   Beloved Evangeline is written in a neo-gothic style and is written specifically for adult readers. The sequel, Ever Evangeline, is near completion and is coming soon.

I am honestly aw struck with the author W. C. Anderson. For this to be her first book....WOW! Definite talent which I am grateful to have stumbled upon.
I was mesmerized and captivated right from the first page. Paranormal books were never the genre that I gravitate to, but after reading this one, I am truly excited and can not wait to read the sequel "Ever Evangeline".
The author did a phenomenal job capturing Evangeline's "off" way of being which makes you guess all through the book what exactly she is all about. Evangeline's friends and family also play pivotal roles throughout the storyline which only adds to all the drama that Evangeline goes through right from page one. I don't want to give anything away from the storyline, but just wanted to prepare you that you will come face to face with, love, hate, ghosts, zombies, vampires, monsters...and some "unknowns"...seriously, does that not sound like the perfect ingredients to a great book?
Will I recommend this book....DEFINITELY!!! (I already have to friends and co workers)
Just wish I knew when to expect the sequel....as I really, really can't wait to see what happens with Evangeline.

I really liked this book. Evangeline has the odds stacked against her and chooses to hide until she digs deep and cirmunstances lead her to missing pieces of her past while changing her future. Is she in control of her life? About as much as the rest of us, but we do not have her challenges, nor her abilities. Told from the first person POV, this story puts you into Evangeline's head, which is good because sometimes her actions would seem rather crazy without it. There is insanity, ghosts, serial killers, lotharios, geeks, romance and evil in this story which twists and turns. The ending is a cliffhanger and left me with jaw wide open. The only downside is that some of the scenes in the office end up being filler - for example the boardroom scene. We already know how she feels about her office and boss. Was this really necessary? Other than that, the book is a good one. I finished it in one sitting. I would highly recommend to those who like dark urban fantasy. I will definitely be reading the whole series.

The book started off great, I laughed at her strange humor. The content for the most part was great & intriguing leaving me wondering what's gonna happen next. However, the closer I got to the ending the more I became confused with the turn of events. The ending completely sucked & left me confused. Good book, except for the ending.

W.C. Anderson introduces us to a new kind of heroine. Evangeline Johnson is not your average young woman, not by a long shot. Anderson leads us down dark and dangerous paths, full of intrigue and suspense with this woman.

The life events Evangeline endures and what transpires are both comedic and horrific. Her daily life is relatable and at times quite funny. Her "other" life? The reader discovers this woman is quite preternatural, yet vulnerable. Evangeline's battles are not easily won, if at all. Therein lies the intrigue and the story leaves the reader wanting for more.

This is the first in a trilogy and I am excited book number two. The wait is going to be hard, which I find is usually the case in a great story.

There was some serious intelligence in the writing in this book. Evangeline's struggles with life and fantasy are incredible and well written. Her belief and pursuit of the otherworldly is based upon experiences beginning with her mother as a child. As an adult, it sets her apart from everyone else. In the end, reality and fantasy come together with a final kind of understanding and acceptance of her life going forward. I could not put this book down. I read this in half a day.

Hard to believe this is Anderson's first book, much less no professional editing!

I enjoyed the introduction of characters and was attracted and accordingly.

The main character Evangeline Johnson is one hot mess! But she is lovable and quirky and has so many characteristics that many of us have. My only frustration was that Evangeline often found herself in dangerous situations, and almost always was at the point of giving up...but pulled it together at the last minute, and found a reason to go on, to keep fighting. I soon realized that my frustration was personal. We all have those times when we are to the point of giving up (maybe not in such precarioous positions as Evangeline) but we persevere! And that is indeed what Evangeline does. And she does so in quite the entertaining way.

I loved how Evangeline took us to the past, the present and to the fantastic. The mystery was a page turner. I enjoyed guessing plot, characters and motives. I cannot wait for number two. I am so excited that this story is to be a trilogy. Anderson can only get better!

The first half of the book was kind of interesting, as it was difficult to tell if it was a woman's decent into madness or not. However, having finally finished the book, I have to say it is disjointed and very poorly written. There are no teasers in the book, so it feels like the story thread breaks all the time. The last part of the book is especially dreadful, because all this crap comes out of left field and it makes no sense. I think there is hope for this author, but the story line needs to be tighter and better written.
