The characters are well developed and dynamic, which allows them to be believable. The plot is structured beautifully and precisely, which moves not too slow and not too fast. All details included only enhance the reader’s understanding and nothing unnecessary is included. It’s clear that the author has created a work of art and Broken Mirror could not have been written in any other way.
Whilst reading, there are loose strings floating around everywhere, leaving questions hanging and avoiding answers. The end ties everything together so perfectly that you realize the strings were left intentionally. The ending is surprising in itself and allows for further deep thoughts. This is a book which could easily be analyzed.
It’s well worth the price considering the fact that I will be re-reading this in the future. I would recommend this book to people who love psychological thrillers as this book is simply that. I’d give this book 6/5 if I could.
Each character is introduced with a bang; poignant and compelling imagery introduces Helen with the birth of her child, the product of a brutal rape. The intense fight for survival was haunting, and with each page, my heart ached for Helen. I found myself rooting for her, but with a morbid curiosity about the one who victimized her simultaneously.
My wishes to know more were always satiated, as Broken Mirror answers all of the reader's questions in great detail. The author succeeds in creating a truly mulch-dimensional killer; the other main character Lucas Wheelan does not fit the typical murderer prototype, which makes his character increasingly compelling and disturbing. Getting inside his psyche and his thoughts was satisfyingly macabre; his use of his authority and his unrelenting dark thoughts left me with a pit in my stomach .
The tangled web of murder, revenge, and evil is woven in such an attention grabbing way as the story peaks again and again that I could not put it down. It is a thrilling look into the world beyond, and into the mind of a killer. The twists and turns along the way left me both in absolute shock, and wanting more.
Despite not having gone through a rough breakup or divorce myself, I was easily able to empathize with the main character from the beginning. The bad guy in the story threw me for a loop by the end, but I must say I liked it. The side characters were developed enough that I felt for them when something happened, but they didn’t take away the spotlight from the main story.
Overall, a very good read and well worth the money spent.
