In "Broken in Soft Places," Fiona Zedde not only leads us into the heart of a very delicate and complex relationship, she ushers us into the soul of two very delicate and complex characters. In Stephen, a bisexual man, and Sara, a lesbian woman, Zedde explores the bookends of a functional but troubled relationship where both Stephen and Sara loyally and completely love the same woman, the intoxicating and exhilirating experience that is Rille. Through this tender and tension-filled relationship, Zedde illuminates the certainty and fear, triumph and failure of love in ways that are simultaneously comforting and unsettling.
A lot happens in "Broken in Soft Places" -- plot twists and surprises, supporting characters that encourage and disappoint. But what makes this novel such a joy to experience is the emotional happenings, the heart work. This book, for Zedde fans especially, is a challenge, a dare even, to follow one of our most dedicated and gifted writers as she leads us into the uncertainty of love to the show us with great care and craft that nothing is ever promised and there is an exception to every rule.
If this novel is an invitation to follow Zedde into new emotional and sexual terrority as she explores all the ways in which our community loves and lives, count me in.
