Broken is a story about hope; one man’s journey to survival and a girl who’s made mistakes.

“Carrying for a war veteran isn’t about philanthropy. It’s about penance.”

Paul Langdon returns from war a shadow of the man he once was, both physically and emotionally. Everything has changed, the way he moves, the way he looks and the way he feels. His father sends him carer after carer to help rehabilitate his body, and more importantly, his mind.... But to accept help, to move on, Paul has to want it. He needs a reason to motivate himself out of the dark. Is there anything or anyone who can make a difference? Change Paul's mindset? Give him hope of a future worth living?

Enter sassy and beautiful, Olivia Middleton. Paul's newest companion/carer.

“…she makes me long for normal. She has to go. Now.”

Will Olivia be able to keep his nightmares at bay?

Our leading characters experience an immediate and fierce attraction to each other. There’s insta lust but that doesn't mean it's all sweet love and plain sailing. There’s a dose of enjoyable angst and drama added to the mix and the build of a beautiful friendship; a routine with each other where they begin to share some lovely habits.

My wishes for more stars:~
I wish there hadn't been so many jumps in the time line. There were sections where it moved on by weeks and I felt like I was left with gaps in my knowledge and emotions. I wanted to completely experience the build of their relationship, not every single minute but, for me, the missing time was slightly too much.

I wish some of the happenings towards the end had been a little different.

I absolutely loved this book. Broken is a beautiful story of redemption and accepting ones self. In a way it is almost like a modern take on Beauty and The Beast....

Broken follows the story of Olivia and Paul. Olivia has made mistakes and is seeking penance for her error in judgement. She needs an escape, a chance to be away from her old life and prove to herself that she is a good person. So, she makes the decision to leave school, and takes on the job as a caretaker for an injured war vet. However, he is nothing like she is expecting. She is surprised to find out that instead of caring for an elderly patient, he is in fact someone her own age. And she soon finds out that she will have to work hard to break past his defenses and this job will be anything but easy. Olivia is supposed to be here to help heal Paul, but will they end up healing each other?????

Paul's life has changed since he got back from war. He not only has scars on the outside, but deep ones on the inside. He is content on living a life of solitude and pushes away anyone who dares to get close. After scaring off his last caretaker, his father gives one more chance. Keep this caretaker around for 3 months, or he's being thrown out. Paul is so blinded by his despair that he accepts. Unfortunately, his new caretaker is a game changer. Olivia makes Paul want things again, reminds him of how life used to be and can be. She wakes up a part of him that he thought was dead and that terrifies him. The closer she gets the more he wants to push her away, but Paul is suddenly finding that harder and harder to do......

Broken had me hooked from the first page. The writing captivated me and kept me wanting more. This book will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride.

This wonderful new adult novel is the story of Olivia and Paul. Olivia needs to get away - from her parents, her friends, her life as it's been and volunteering to help an injured war veteran seems like a good way to do penance for her wrongs. What she doesn't count on is that she'll be the caregiver for Paul, a 24 year old man, scarred inside and out from his last tour of duty. Both have walls they don't want breached - but a simmering sexual attraction between them threatens to shatter those barriers. Will it be worth it for them to take a chance on each other?

I loved this story! Olivia is a very engaging character as a young woman who has made mistakes - ones she feels can't be forgiven. At the same time she is strong and determined, realizing that she must pull herself up by her bootstraps and find out who she is really meant to be. Paul is a handsome but scarred, brooding, solitary and lonely man. He too is looking for penance for his part in staying alive when his friends died on their last military mission. He is adept at keeping people out and wants nothing more than to be left alone. When Olivia shows herself to be determined to get through to him, he lashes out at her - an anger that quickly turns to passion. I found the sexual chemistry between the two characters to be riveting. The eventual love scenes between them were very emotional and intense. Having the scenes alternate in first person point of view made for a dynamic story, following the thoughts and feelings of Olivia and Paul as they traverse the minefield of relationship possibilities.

The secondary characters play key parts in the plot, as does the setting of the story. Keeping the characters isolated in a remote mansion draws out the tension between them, and made for a fast paced and hard to put down story. I can't wait to read more in this series. 5 stars!
