Brome 1024 Squirrel Buster Plus
Equipped with patented Squirrel Buster technology, this Brome 1024 Squirrel Buster Plus bird feeder offers an innovative design that attracts birds while keeping squirrels at bay. The bird feeder holds 3 quarts of bird seed, whether it's Black Oil sunflower seed (a good all-round birdseed) or other seed blends specific to your area.
A welcome choice for bird lovers, the squirrel-proof bird feeder attracts a wide variety of clinging and perching birds including American Gold Finches, Chickadees, Cardinals, Downy Woodpeckers, Indigo Buntings, Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, Evening Grosbeaks, and Purple Finches. A Cardinal Ring comes included, providing a comfortable perch for Cardinals.
Squirrel-Proof / Chew-Proof
Openings in the bottom section of the feeder (shroud) align with seed ports, providing birds access to the seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing the seed ports. Squirrels and large birds are blocked from accessing the seed, but are not harmed in any way.
The Closing Mechanism
Start by using the feeder with the factory setting before making any adjustments. A small red squirrel (4 ounces) will trigger the closing mechanism at this setting. To increase the setting, rotate the transparent cartridge clockwise. The red line will move down from the previous setting. This increases the weight required to close access to the seed. To decrease the setting, turn the cartridge counter clockwise. The red line will move up from the previous setting. This decreases the weight required to close access to the seed. The adjustable weight settings make it easy to control unwanted squirrels and larger-size birds.
Place the Feeder Almost Anywhere
Position your feeder just about anywhere and be squirrel-free. Hang the Squirrel Buster Plus over a window, in a tree, on a deck or fence, in your garden, on the side of your house, from a rain gutter, or over sliding doors to get great close-up views of your favorite birds. The bird feeder hangs easily with the use of a wall bracket, extension hook, or tree hook (sold separately).
Easy to Fill and Dishwasher-Safe
The Squirrel Buster Plus dismantles for convenient filling, and it's top-rack dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning as needed.

It does indeed deter squirrels as well, I watched one try again and again to acess this feeder to no avail. However, the local starlings have learned to grasp the cardinal ring and flap enough to partially open the feed ports (clever little buggers). The cardinal ring will be removed to eliminate that issue. The versitility of this feeder is wonderful.

ADDITIONAL POST: I lost my instructions for assembling after washing and called the number on the website they they talked me through the process. It was nice to speak to a actual person. I think they are in Canada. Great service. 8.2.10
The Brome is much heavier throughout, with a strong plastic tube joined up with metal and plastic parts. The mechanical spring adjuster is totally enclosed within the unit so it doesn't rust and the squirrels cant get at it. It also comes apart easily for washing. The "cardinal" ring is an optional installation, other wise you set the perch length for the size bird you want to attract.
So do birds like it? yes very much, it will hold 3 or 4 finch at a time, or two larger birds.
So has it stumped the squirrels? yes they try sometimes, but are satisfied to hang out on the ground below. I did have an unknown predator skunk the feeder once when I had it installed too low to the ground. I suspect it was either Deer or raccoon that rocked it side to side dumping 1.5 lbs of seed out. I've moved it higher now and have not had a repeat event.
I suspect with care this feeder will last many years.
June 2008 update
A year later and this feeder has held up very well. Squirrels have scratched the lid trying to open it but they still can't get to the feed. The top appears to aluminum because despite the scratches it has not rusted. I like how easy this feeder is to clean and the spring mechanism is very well protected so it's still working like new.Read more ›
How did they do it? Simple: they climb on the perch which pulls it down and closes the holes. So far so good. But then they launch off the perch in a way that causes the feeder to start spinning like a washing machine. As they do this, the weight comes off the perch and the holes open. Voila! 1/2 pound of bird feed is conveniently sprayed in a 360 degree radius - a perfect spread for the offending squirrel and his 8 friends to enjoy. The squirrels think it's really funny to watch smoke coming out of my ears. They just climb back up...and...spiiiiiiiinn!!! At one point I wasn't sure if they were doing it for fun or for the food. Anyways, I guess we'll have to wait for another Einstein to be be born to finally outsmart these guys.

So far, only small birds eating from it?? Our 4 pair of Cardinals won't touch it!Published 14 hours ago by Charles Horton
This is a nice feeder and so far the squirrels haven't figured how to get any food. The spring loaded perch keeps the larger birds from getting much seed. Read morePublished 1 day ago by J from Md
A fantastic product! We also bought the Brome feeder for the woodpeckers - highly recommend both - birds visit all day long and the squirrels have long ago given up trying!Published 1 day ago by Jojo

This is a high quality feeder, our 2nd one. The 1st one lasted about 3 years in the Texas heat, before succumbing to normal wear and tear.Published 2 days ago by J. Robinson
