I drink this brewed as you would any loose tea--it's malty, strong but not bitter. It is "CTC" tea, meaning the leaves have been cut and rolled during the fermentation process. Better tea is whole leaf, but for chai and daily drinking, this is a cut above bag tea, which has more "fannings", which is a nice word for "tea leaf dust." All you need for a 3 cup pot is about 3 tsp, so it's economical to use. The used leaves can go compost the garden.

How to make your own chai? Get a ginger root, cut off a couple of slices. Crush it a bit Make a big pot of tea and add a whole cinnamon stick, a tsp of black peppercorns, some whole cardamom pods, a tsp of whole cloves. Brew this together, simmering the tea on low in a cooking pot (I know, you aren't supposed to boil tea, but this is chai.) If you want more of a spicy flavor, you can buy Chai Masala in an Indian grocery, but I like the whole spices. After about 10 to 15 minutes, strain this tea and mix with whole milk or evaporated milk and some sugar and cook it a bit more. I use raw sugar and evaporated milk. It should be a bit strong, milky and sweet. You can chill any leftovers and reheat it.

I love Taj Mahal Black Tea (ASIN: B000JSQDHW). I've ordered it twice though Amazon and both times their shipper (SimplyBeautiful) has sent the Orange Pekoe (ASIN: B007ZI1XQ0).

Orange Pekoe is quite common as all the American Tea Bags (Lipton, Luzianne, etc.) use Orange Pekoe. I spend a lot of time in India and have come to greatly enjoy the Bombay Street Tea, which is always made using Black Tea.

SimplyBeautiful obviously has a problem in their warehouse: they've got the wrong carton in the wrong bin. Both times, I've reported this to Amazon and they promptly refunded; however, they would not contact the shipper and let them know they have a problem.

HOW DO I GET TAJ MAHAL BLACK TEA INSTEAD OF ORANGE PEKOE?

I've used this brand of tea for years and I still think it is one of the best teas around. It is quite strong and can serve as a substitute for a cup of coffee. This tea has outstanding flavor and will never taste weak or watery. Just a small amount of tea is needed for a pot of tea, therefore, even 2 lbs. will last a long time. To preserve flavor over time, I keep the tea in an airtight container. A must for tea aficionados!

Enough Indian and English people have told me that Brooke Bond and Taj Mahal are perfectly fine teas, more than 95% as good as the best, etc, so I finally had to order this Taj Mahal loose tea. They were right, it is *very* good tea and quite a bargain as well! I do like a strong, full-bodied tea and sometimes prepare a masale for chai or add orange peel, vanilla, or other spices and herbs to the morning pot. This tea really stands up and is a good choice for drinking plain with milk or Indian style.
It arrives vacuum-packed in a foil (mylar?) bag which is not recloseable, but it's such a bargain it would be nitpicking to complain about the need to repackage upon opening. :)

This is product is terrific as iced tea. I've brewed it room temperature on an overnight basis using half the specified amount. It turned out really well. I've also brewed according to the instructions using boiling water. The flavor is very different, but equally enjoyable. Real winner, especially if you just plan to drink unsweetened iced tea.
