"A clever mix of family drama and dark thriller! Highly Recommend! I would recommend this novel to anybody who enjoys a good thriller with a strong "it might just happen." But, also--and this is where the book is different from many thrillers--there's a strong family element.--The Wishing Shelf Book Review

Brooklyn Bitters follows the story of Kate Hathaway, a single career woman, a care taker for her mother, a big sister and an aunt. Kate's role in life isn't exactly what she wants, she longs for more and she receives her wish. In life issues that she never could have imagined or saw coming, Kate takes on the world. A truly coming of age story. So many interesting characters, I particularly loved the story of Kate's sister, Stacy. Stacy and Kate have a difficult relationship, Stacy being the younger sister actually bully's and manipulates her big sister Kate. Stacy is one of my favorites in the book. I don't want to give away too much but Stacy is a little on the scary side. With this Author's great ability in writing psychological novels she does not disappoint! Many times I found myself on the edge of my seat and all of the time I could not put the book down. I absolutely loved this book. I have read it two times! It is just the best and quite a thriller. If I could give this 10 stars I absolutely would. You will love it, many twist and turns that you will not see coming!
Brooklyn Bitters it the first book that I have read Sally Saylor de Smet and I have to say that this is another book that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are so engaging, and I have to say that I liked Kate the most. I loved her heart towards her mother. I honestly didn't see any heart for anyone other than herself with Stacey. Stacey comes off as selfish, self-absorbed, spoiled and honestly...insecure. Kate is struggling with her guilt behind a freak accident and it seems that Stacey skipped right on ahead without a care. Kate is career-focused, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't yearn for love and romance in her own life.
For me, I felt that these characters are true to life. I could imagine seeing them and knowing who was the more caring between the two. Kate cares about her mom, makes sure that she's okay and when she ends up in the hospital I see it even more. When she goes to call her sister to let her know what has happened I felt I already knew what Stacey's response would be simply based on how she reacted when Kate asked her to check on their mom while she was out of town.
The romance angle in this story is tastefully done for those who like romances that don't take off like a jet. But be prepared for that romance to take a darker twist as this book heads down the road of becoming a dark thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Just go ahead and clear your schedule because this is a book that you won't want to put down. You get a nice variety of characters from - Kate, her younger sister Stacey, the boring husband, Gunner, the kindly neighbor, and the new boss who...honestly...just isn't that bright.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book does a fantastic job of mixing romance and thriller together to create a book that is hard to put down. It brings the readers a family that is dysfunctional, but it doesn't dampen the story in any way. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Katherine Hathaway is a successful single woman in her fourties. She loves her family. When she attends a conference in NY she meets her soul mate, Gunner.
Gunner Baldwin is a 38 year old man with a past. He's driven by revenge, but he loves his Kate.
What starts as romance turns into a breathstealing thriller.
Brooklyn Bitters is not a book with a hea, it's excrutiating, heart-wrenching and at the end of the story I was a sobbing mess.
Brooklyn Bitters is told in a single POV, it's a slow burn, excellent written and beautifully thought out and beautifully told.
I recommend this book 5 Stars.
