Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Tim McLoughlin was born and raised in Brooklyn. His debut novel, Heart of the Old Country (Akashic), was hailed as reminiscent of James T. Farrell's Studs Lonigan and George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris. He was editor of Brooklyn Noir, first in the Akashic Noir Series, as well as Brooklyn Noir 2 and Brooklyn Noir 3. An Edgar Award-winning novelist, Thomas Adcock is a veteran newspaper and magazine journalist. He divides his time between a Manhattan apartment and an eighteenth-century farmhouse in upstate New York.

2.0 out of 5 stars True Crime Shorts. A Case of Unintentional Defamation
By VJD on February 29, 2020
If you haven't been reading the Noir series, you are truly missing out.
Just pick a favorite city and have at it. 😄
I am only getting started with this one.
The theme is set for these true Brooklyn narratives with the first story -- the horrific murder of teacher Allyn Winslow.
However I was stopped cold.
On the second page of the first story, while explaining the "raw racial nerve" of the city, she referenced the Central Park Jogger case:
"a pack of five black youths out "wilding" as it was called, raped their victim [Her Name Was Trisha Meili] and then beat her nearly to death".
1. Eight people were attacked that night.
2. Cops arrested 24 Black males.
3. Three victims were Black or Brown.
4. There were about nine separate indictments.
5. Five youth served 6-13 years.
~>ACTUALLY they were innocent. (Later - DNA)
Throughout, in NYC, mobsters and traders in children, and extortionists, murderers, money launderers, gun traders, international thieves, war criminals, billion-dollar medicare fraudsters, have made NY the most crime-ridden state in the USA, operating with unusual impunity.
Of course when the unbelievable carnage and murders and child exploitation happens in certain communities, it's the romantic stuff of slow-motion movies with the beautiful musical score. And that funny cool slang. But when it happens in Brownsville, "they're hopeless!! they're animals!"
It's a city FULL of animals. And rodents.
And nooooo don't 'evah' mention the usual suspects! shhhhhhh.
So this book may be too skewed to read. Maybe it should have been recalled or burned.
