I tried the original Transcend and those were a bit of a love / hate relationship out of the box. I wasn't crazy about the looks and they were the stiffest shoe I had ever tried to the point that I was getting heel blisters for about two weeks until the shoes started to flex more easily. They were also stiff underfoot to the point that they didn't feel all that cushioned. But I stuck with them and eventually they broke in. They went on to last a long time and perform really well for me.
I skipped the Transcend 2 but when it came time to replace my current running shoes, I found these Transcend 3's being closed out at a great price so, I bought a pair in blue and a pair in red /orange. I really like all the updates. First, the looks are much nicer than my original Transcends. I'm a Clydesdale but these don't look so much like industrial strength running shoes. The colors are nice too. The fit is nice for me right out of the box. I wear a 10.5 D width in a street shoe. I bought my original Transcends in size 11.0 medium or D width. The length was fine but they were a little narrow in the forefoot. The Transcend 3's on the other hand were perfect for me in the same size 11.0 medium or D width. The length is good but the forefoot and toe box is roomy and comfortable right out of the box. They also flex better from the moment you slip them on. There was no break in period and no blisters. The sock liner seems nicer and more plush. And I can feel the huge amount of cushioning immediately. They also look like they should breathe well with a see through mesh on most of the upper but all my running so far has been in cold weather so it's hard to judge.
And the Transcend 3's continue all the protection that this model is known for. Plenty of stability with guide rails down the sides. One of the most cushioned shoes available. Nice strong heel cup. Good arch support for low to medium arches. And a nice insole.
I consider the version 3 of this shoe a huge upgrade from the original.in every way. They are more comfortable for me in every way. And better looking too. I hope they wear like the originals. If they do, I have no complaints whatsoever. I think this is THE best shoe out there for a fairly neutral runner over 200 lbs. Like I said, they are expensive but at at the same time cheap compared to knee and hip problems. My philosophy is if I'm gonna run, I'm gonna protect myself from chronic injuries.
I am using the KT tape to recover from the previous injuries, but with these shoes I have no pain and feel like I am floating on air when fitness-walking in these shoes. Yesterday I could barely walk a total of 10,000 steps in a day, this morning I walked 10,000 steps in one walk with zero pain and would have kept going but for a time constraint.
Note that I did find the size slightly small; returned the first pair for a half size bigger.
I've been out running a few times and have run slightly over 10 miles in them now and they are a little stiff yet (hence the 4 star instead of 5) but am happy with how they fit and feel. I hope once they are broken in a little more that they will be even better.
