Top customer reviews
The inside of the unit is a metal bucket that holds the towels. This inner metal bin is covered with HVAC metal insulating tape holding a heating wire to heat the bin. Chances are if your unit stops working and you open it up, you will find one area marked by scorch marks where the unit burned. See attached pictures that show the wire casing had disintegrated and arched to the metal shell where some of the casing actually burned. This is a classic electrical fire and luckily did not start a fire by igniting anything else.
My guess is after about 6months of routine/average use, the wiring is heated over and over again which eventually causes it to fail.
On the bright side you could always turn it into a stand up cooler or a trash can six months after you buy it!
Even without the lid I used a glass pan lid from my kitchen and was able to use the product as inteded. The unit worked with no problems. However, after testing it several times with different towels there were cold spots all over the towels and the spots that weren't cold were warm. I tried placing the towels in different ways. Rolled up, tossed in, folded, all with the same results. And the online instructions off the Brookstone website just says to place the towels into the towel warmer which doesn't tell me much. Also, the worst design flaw for this product is that after it reaches a certain temperate (around 120 degrees F or a certain time?) the heat shuts off and it gradually gets colder. I like to enjoy my showers and I take around a 20-30 minute shower. That means, right before I get into the shower, I turn the towel warmer on, then after 10 minutes there is a 10-20 minute time frame where the towel will gradually get colder. And since the towel warmer only reaches up to 120 degrees F as stated on the tin and then the heat shuts off, there is no way for the towel inside to get that hot unless the temperate were to stay 120 degrees F for several minutes before it turned the heat off which is not what it does. So the towel MAY get around 90 degrees F which is below a warm temperature for a towel warmer product. I tested this by placing a glass pan lid on top of the product that has a small hole on top for a kitchen temperate nose to poke through. Once my temperature gauge hit 120 degrees the heating light shut off. So even though the product says it warms to about 120 degrees F your towels will never get that hot. Since this very pricey towel warmer does only one thing and that is to heat a towel then this product has greatly fallen short. If it made me coffee, massaged my feet AND warmed towels then I wouldn't expect it to excel in warming towels when it does two other things. But all it does it warm towels and it can't even do that right.
The only reason why I gave two stars was because of the prompt customer support. I believe if the towel warmer didn't shut off so quickly and it stayed at 120 degrees F for 15-20 minutes, so maybe a total of 30 minutes, then this product would be so much better. Or put a timer button on it for 10, 20 and 30 minutes so people can choose their warmth. But this product was designed so that you couldn't bypass the built-in timer. If you want your towel as hot as it can possibly get, which may be around 100 degrees F, you will need to get out of your nice warm shower/bath and press the power button again. But even then there is a cool down time before you can press the on button so even then it may not work.
Overall I am very disappointed in this product. This is something I imagine would see at Wal-Mart for $29.99 as one of those seasonal items that can be a hit or miss. I expected a lot more from Brookstone just because of all their high end gadgets and expensive looking store fronts. Since the new product has already been shipped to me with hopefully a lid this time, I will thoroughly test that unit. Maybe the unit I received was a refurbished unit since the lid was missing but I paid for a new unit. If the new unit works better I will rate it as such. But be warned, if you expect a nice hot towel to come out of this towel warmer it won't happen.
Has gotten worse and I need to put extra towels at the bottom in order to put the towel I want to warm up towards the top so it'll get warm but it's only halfway warming the towel ... No good!
I'm bummed I wasted the money on this - I liked it at first
Initial review -
it doesn't smell horrific and I definitely almost didn't buy because of someone else's post AND I have a VERY sensitive sense of smell, like a dog's. :)
It was so exciting to use and it stayed warm long after it turned off automatically.
The only reason i gave it four stars is because I had to put a small towel at the bottom of the unit to Allow the entire towel to warm because only the top 3/4 of the towel gets warm, my husband and I both tried a few times to make sure we didn't need to run it a few times. But, nope the bottom never got warm- I'm wondering if received a defective unit? Anyone else ever find that issue?
Also-I've always dreamt of a towel warmer but it was so complex - this is simple and stands by itself on the floor so no installation nonsense or electrical nonsense!
