I recently purchased this machine after my old Kenmore mechanical machine kept jamming and bunching thread. I was sewing a Halloween costume and wanted to continue. It was 9:30 p.m. and nothing was open except the big box W*****t store. I did not want to quit, I was on a roll and in the mood, so I went to buy a machine. I quickly looked at Amazon and other sites for reviews of various models. I took my iPad with me so I could read reviews on whatever models they had in stock. They only had 3, and this was one of them.

I have sewn and quilted for many years. I go through phases where I quilt and sew up a storm, then stop for months and months. I would consider myself an intermediate sewer. I have always sewn on the old-time mechanical machines and decided that I would get a computerized or electronic machine. I want to get a really good quality machine for Christmas, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I figured whatever I buy now would be a backup, if needed.

I liked the features:
* 100 built-in stitches
* Built in sewing fonts for basic monogramming
* 8 buttonhole styles - 1 step auto-size
* Start / stop button (or you an sew with the pedal)
* Speed control
* Drop feed for free-motion quilting
This machine also came with several quilting feet, twin needles, accessories and tools, and a wide table extension for quilting!

SETUP
If you are familiar with sewing machines, this has a pretty basic setup. It is intuitive in that you only need to briefly glance at the booklet to set it up. It took me about 10" to wind the bobbin (3 included), thread the machine and get ready to sew. I did change some settings from the default (needle down in fabric when machine stops sewing and needle position to the left).

All I can say is OUTSTANDING in performance!!! I put it under the ultimate pressure test of 7 layers of fleece at some points, while making 40+ hat the past few days. I never imagined that this machine would be able to take that kind of beating but I must say I am very pleased with this machine and expect that I will enjoy it for years to come. I am a brother fan for life!!!

I am a beginner at sewing and got this machine for my birthday. It seemed kind of overwhelming at first but once I got it together and started sewing I really liked it. I made a baby blanket with satin binding and batting and it worked like a champ!

This isn't a heavyweight machine, but, it sews nicely. Nice stitches. However, I've been sewing for over 40 years and this isn't the best machine I've ever sewn on. Thought I'd try this machine. It does jam up once in a while. My biggest complaint is this...I was sewing some polar fleece, which had a lot of static. I was at my dining room table and pushed the machine back to make room to lay my fabric in front of it. As soon as I touched the machine the static electricity made the machine stop completely, then some smoke rose up from the back. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in again. The motherboard was fried. I took it to a repair shop and I'm still waiting for Brother to send another motherboard to the repair shop. It's been about 5 weeks. It is still under warranty, but, that does me no good without a machine. You would think there would be a ground wire built into the machine, but, there isn't. This computerized and there's no ground wire to prevent static electricity from damaging the motherboard! That's a bit ridiculous. If you decide to buy this machine be prepared that this might happen. It is a lightweight machine, not only weight wise, but, also sewing wise. It doesn't handle really thick fabric very well. Does have some nice features, though.

Best beginner sewing machine. I have had minr for 5 years and when i upgraded to Janome i can finally review it for i had nothing to compare it to before. It is a really nice sewing machine. After 5 years of use it still works wonderful. I love lt. It came with so many feet and accessories you do not need to buy anything to take on any project. It sews everything but super thick layers of fabric. But that is normal for this price range machine. If you want so sew thick fabrics you have to buy a more expensive machine. I absolutely recomment this to anyone starting to sew.
