So I chose this printer partly because it didn't have too many reviews to convince me to not buy it. One other key reason is that the description mentions it is good for home and student use. This is the only printer I've seen that mentions that it's good for students, and that often means that the company has genuinely tried to make sure that the product is economic for a student or a budget-minded consumer like myself. While I haven't printed extensively and don't know what the ink usage will be like, other reviewers seem to be happy with the individual cartridges and as long as I can control the print quality, that's great. When the printer did the first test print, I was happy to see that it didn't use the whole page and printed very small color boxes to test the printing. Little things like that, tell me that the company and product are conservative when it comes to ink usage or at least it gives me more hope.
As for the set-up. I approached the printer with patience and was ready for any hang-ups that might occur. There just weren't any. The instructions were great. I used a cable to connect to my PC and haven't bothered to set that up wireless. I did use wireless to connect to my laptop. Again that was easy and smooth. I needed to scan a couple of documents to e-mail. I first thought I had to install additional drivers from the CD that came with the printer to scan, but happily found out that was installed with the initial set-up. Scanning was super easy with the program PaperPort. There's probably a lot more to what the program can do, but scanning and saving a document as a PDF file that I attached to an e-mail was simple.
I have printed a whole lot, so I'm not sure how print quality will measure up but am realizing like what one reviewer said, you just won't get the same crispness with an inkjet that you get with a laser printer. So far what I've printed seems fine and I don't need the color to be exceptional. It's just fun to have. I didn't buy this for photo printing capabilities but that might be fun to have down the road.
Last thing to mention is that I'm glad this doesn't have a fax machine because I just don't need one right now. I don't even have a land line and didn't want a fax option. It's just not necessary when I can scan and send documents via e-mail. I don't have anything negative to mention at this point but will update if I run into anything worth mentioning.
The print quality is good, reasonably fast, and quiet. Ink is inexpensive and seems to last a decent amount of time. The scanner is quick and easy to use. I also like being able to print from my Android phone and tablet via Brother's app.
My only real gripe about this printer is that it does some kind of cleaning process every couple of nights. I sleep about three feet away from where it sits, so it generally wakes me up when it does this. I haven't found a way to schedule it for a different time of day, but will come update this review if I find a way to do so.
After about 4 months, I've become a fan of Brother! The installation took about 20 minutes on an older computer and went smoothly. The print quality is not quite as sharp as Lexmark or HP, but is good enough for everyday office and personal use. The aftermarket replacement cartridges work fine (although they don't exactly resemble the originals), and at 65 to 75 cents each I can buy a whole year's worth for less than what one Lexmark cartridge used to cost! My only slightly negative comment is that some of the parts, like the paper tray, are not very sturdy so you have to treat them gently.
I know there are lots of positive reviews of Brother printers here, but I wanted to add mine as well since the company really seems to have listened to past complaints and has built a much better product.
