I'm done with Brother machines. This OEM cartridge messed up my printer

This toner cartridge is OEM, genuine Brother, but apparently it's junk.

My printer told me the toner was low in October, so I ordered a new one. I am a lawyer and can't have my printer down. It turned out the printer was a bit premature because the toner didn't run out until December. This detail becomes important later in the story. After I replaced the toner, I started having print quality problems, with toner scattered on the page. I can't have bad print quality. I called Brother the first week in January and was on the phone for an hour with them. Every time I call it's an hour-long phone call, which I hate. The rep had me update the firmware, and after that the problem stopped. Well, now it's the first week of February and I'm having the same print quality problem with scattered toner on the page again. It looks terrible. I called Brother today and was on the phone for an hour again while the rep went through her trouble-shooting and put me on hold repeatedly. Eventually she said there was a problem with the toner cartridge. (At this point, I don't know if it's a problem with the toner, or if it has also messed up the drum unit.) She asked when I bought the toner to see if it's still within warranty. I looked it up and told her I bought it in October, when the printer said it was low, but I didn't have to install it until late December. Well, she said, since I bought it in October, it is now out of the 90-day warranty and I am out of luck, even though I just put it in use six weeks ago. I told her this is no way to treat a customer and she didn't care.

I am not going to buy another Brother printer. This is just the latest problem I've had with Brother. They used to make the best printers and I've been buying and using Brother machines since 2001. But the quality has declined in the last ten years and I'm done. Now we're buying HP printers.

After learning the hard way about aftermarket cartridges and the negative effects on my printers I now only buy OEM cartridges. This past week we inserted a new Brother cartridge and drum into a three month old printer only to have the cartridge erupt in a black cloud of toner. Fortunately, only the cartridge and drum were ruined and we were able to blow the rest of the toner material out with a compressor (outdoors, otherwise the office would be laminated in black powder).
That said, $98 for the cartridge and $116 for the drum right into the dumpster. I'm not looking for a credit just want it known that OEM is no guarantee of quality either.

The brother OEM TN-850 toner cartridge MTSJ16B002042AD003H8 purchased through Amazon.com left a grey shadow across the entire page and I had to spend another $100 to replace it plus the cost of a DR820 drum I didn't need. Brother technical support quality has declined right along with their product quality and warranty terms over the past 10 years. I still have to support 14 Brother MFC's and HL printers and need to start replacing with reliable products. There is no longer a benefit to using genuine toners. As recent as 2 years ago, Brother USA would warranty replace defective products purchased in the last 3 months but that is no longer the case. Remanufactured toners and drums get better support than that offered by Brother. My last experience was from a gentleman with a thick India/Pakistani accent in "Chicago USA".

Shadowing and toner dots, unacceptable printing quality

If you are like me, you buy this toner before your printer is out. Then when you install it (for me 6 months later) it shadows the entire page and leaves specs and dots all over prints. It also makes a big toner mess inside printer, acts like a refilled cartridge...not a brand new OEM cartridge like it appears to be. At first I thought it was installed wrong, or my drum needed replaced, or something like that. I messed around with it, cleaned the drum, cleaned the cartridge and printer...but still had the same result. I drove to a big box store and bought another toner cartridge, installed it and EVERYTHING was fixed.
I think the particular source of these Amazon sold cartridges may have more quality problems than other sources, or they may be counterfeit...I cant tell. The packaging seems authentic though, but maybe come from a different factory?
Now I going to change my strategy and not pre-buy toner before I am out. That way, if i buy new toner and it has problems, I can return it while it is on warranty.

This is my second toner purchase of the "Brother TN-850 DCP-L5500 L5600 L5650 HL-L5000D L5100 L5200 L5200 Toner Cartridge (Black) in Retail Packaging". The first one was perfect. When I got the initial warning I was running low on the first purchase I purchased another one and oddly enough that first cartridge, though it said it was low lasted us almost a year after the warning so my second toner cartridge sat in the supply closet. I put this second purchase into my printer and now it is printing with a dusting of gray and black ink all over every document with no ability to return it for a replacement because I am well past the return date. We are a small law firm and having to pay for a new cartridge all over again, not to mention the inconvenience of not being able to print clean documents - so frustrating!

Definitely doesn't last anywhere near 8000 sheets

I'm on my 3rd genuine Brother TN850 cartridge and I can attest to the fact that the 8000-sheet capacity is extremely misleading unless perhaps you are printing 8000-sheets of regular text in toner save mode. Obviously, it depends on what you're printing. But in my case, it was all text, but sometimes with large bold font. So I give it 3 stars because of the cost and disappointing real-world capacity. Switching now to Aztech compatible cartridges at a fraction of the cost.

Have bought this toner 10 times now, for use in 3 Brother printers running high volume use. One cartridge was bad, spilling toner on the page. Amazon promptly replaced it. All others have been good. Printing gets a bit spotty toward the end. There is far too much toner remaining when the printer declares the cartidge empty - that is frustrating. Average print about 500 pages fewer than advertised.
