My one complaint is that the manual form feed slot is frustrating. It's a tiny slit, not a tray that holds and support inserted media, and the slit doesn't lead smoothly into the printer feed. As a result, I have to try placing feed-in paper with precision, finding just the right position for it to be accepted. It seems the printer could have had a smoother intake window for manual forms. When the printer isn't warmed up, my insertion of manually-fed media seems to baffle the printer and it goes into it's "red light" error mode, as if the printer is going, "What, what?? Who, me? Am I supposed to do something with this? I'm confused!" I have to remove the paper, click the printer off and on, and resume the effort with a "warmed up" device instead.
ADDENDUM: I've been having problems documents failing to print. The printer doesn't even warm up; it just fails. I have to cancel the print job, turn the printer off and on, and then everything works perfectly. I have no idea why, and have not seen thisproblem in other reviews.
This printer is a snap to setup, just remove some packing material, insert the toner cartridge and paper, install the printer drivers and away you go. The print quality is what you would expect from a laser printer, crisp, clear and above all it doesn't smear if it gets wet like inkjet print. This is a very basic printer with minimal controls but for my needs it's perfect. It's very fast and somewhat noisy but again I don't care much about the noise for the limited volume of printing that I do.
I got this printer for $69 plus shipping and I think it's a bargain. It seems to be a solid little printer, very sturdy construction which is on par with my expectations for this class of printer. I have confidence that I'll have this printer and it will still be working for a few years which is more than I can say about some other brands. The only draw back that I can find is that the USB cable wasn't included in the box. I had several of them laying around so for me it wasn't an issue but I know that a good number of people will find themselves making a second trip to the store in order to get the necessary cable.
So if you're like me and are tired of buying expensive ink and just need a quality black and white printer then this will serve you well. It's not intended for large volume printing but I think that for most home users it's right on the money.
I tried all different kinds of trouble shooting, and finally called CS. After spending 45 minutes on the phone trouble shooting with the Brother CS rep she finally decided to send me a replacement *refurbished* model after using my credit card to put a $50 "hold" to make sure I send the malfunctioning item back with in 3 (!) business days. Also, if you have to do this, they make you keep your paperwork, drivers, paper TRAY, toner & drum, etc, and they only replace the main unit.
I am hoping that it will work, but am not happy about buying a new item, spending all of this time, and then having to use a refurbished printer when I paid for new. I bought Brother because we have a Brother DCP-7020 that has worked really well for 2 years, and I was hoping this would be a similarly satisfying situation. Unfortunately this was not to happen.
I am a writer but I often prints color photographs too, so I was using color photo printers for years. But in the midst of printing black on white manuscripts, a window would pop up to tell me I had better change the magenta cartridge or risk damaging the machine. I thought the machine might use a touch of magenta when printing black, but when the photo cyan cartridge gave out, I suspected something devious.
I calculated what I'd spent of ink cartridges for the past year and realized I could buy the brother HL-2140 plus enough toner to print 26 manuscripts of 400 pages each for the same amount. So I did.
The installation instructions that came in the box are clear, simple and precise. In ten minutes, I had the HL-2140 printing. But I had two problems.
Printing the same page on both printers, I noticed that the brother does not get the letters as black as the color printer does. Although the sheet printed on the brother is fine, no quibbling, I tried to get a darker print. In "print properties, advanced" I changed the resolution from 600 dpi to 1200, but noticed no difference between the two. I tried using "graphics" instead of "general." That didn't help either.
Reluctantly I accepted that when all else fails I have to read the instructions. The user guide did not come in my box, but I quickly found it on the brother website and downloaded the Acrobat file. I found the solution is the density adjustment slider, which is not easy to find. Go to Printer/Properties/Advanced/Device Options and select "Density Adjustment" for the list to activate the slider. This option does not work if 1200 dpi is selected or with Macintosh computers. But with Windows at 600 dpi, I could replicate the results with my ink printer.
My other problem was the brother printed last page first, forcing me manually restack the document. After reading the manual twice, I couldn't figure how to solve it. (Please stop laughing.) Finally, I discovered I had the "Reverse Print Order" box checked in the Windows printer options dialogue. Windows, not the print driver controls this option.
But reading the manual served me well. I learned the brother HL-2140 has an impressive array of duplex print options and other features. This machine is a super good value.
