I decided to get another printer because I want the wireless feature. Like other reviewers stated, setting up the wireless feature is a bear. Also, I am shocked at the scanner quality. The DCP7040 scanner is superb and I thought the HL2280 would be the same. It is NOT. The quality is vastly different--even when you adjust the brightness and contrast. It doesn't matter. Poor quality is poor quality. For these reasons, I am giving this product a 1 star and returning the printer. What a disappointment.
But one feature that I DO like about this printer is the easy dual-side printing. That is great! The rest of it....not so much. Maybe Brother will make the needed corrections in which case, I will be the first one in line.
I owned another brand of wireless, multipurpose device before purchasing this but got tired of the ink price issues and the inability to refill their cartridges so I went the laser route. The previous unit scanned nicely from the front panel with scan to email, scan to USB, etc so I continued to use it for awhile after purchasing the Brother. When I wanted to move to the Brother unit exclusively, I realized that I couldn't get the scanner to install and function wirelessly from the unit’s front panel. All it displayed when the ‘scan’ is initiated is ‘check connection’. So, I began searching the web and lo and behold, this is a very common problem. The web experiences alleged that, in addition to having technical problem, Brother customer support would resort to blaming the computer’s operating system.
I reinstalled their drivers, multi-function suite, installation diagnostics, etc, etc, etc all to no avail. Then I resorted to a chat session with Brother customer support. They guided me to a site with steps that I had already executed associated with Windows Firewall UDPs and when I told them that I had already performed those steps to no avail, they, drum roll please, blamed Windows! Yep, it's Microsoft's fault that Brother delivers a product that won't actually do what it's claimed to be able to do. Well, that was almost enough to get me to write a review of the device, but the next exchange almost had me out of my chair. When I pointed out that if Brother wasn't prepared to support and make their product work that I would make that fact known as a caution to others who actually want to get what they paid for. That's when I was tacitly threatened by Brother! My copy/paste of the chat session unfortunately truncated some sentences, but statements from Brother included: "Brother pursues legal action and seeks punitive damages against any individuals..." and "...caution you to take care that any and all statements you make are accurate and verifiable..." I have dealt with some incompetent and even belligerent customer service reps in the past, but this is the first time that I have hit the trifecta--incompetence, belligerence with a topping of veiled threats!
Well, as I promised to the incompetent Brother ‘customer service’ rep, I will be elevating this to Brother's corporate. I will repost with a final outcome, but for now....I'M DONE WITH BROTHER's PRODUCTS.
First, the device came broken out of the box - by the time we figured out what the obscure error code meant, we couldn't return it. No problem, as Brother serviced it and fixed it. From the get-go, the printer couldn't scan due to a defective board inside, but it's no longer giving the error. Can it scan? Who knows!
Which brings us to connectivity issues - every time the printer was turned off, or otherwise lost power, it had to be manually reconnected to the network. This wouldn't be a problem if it REMEMBERED THE FREAKING PASSWORD, but no, you have to manually hit the up and down buttons until the correct character is displayed. It takes about 2-3 minutes just to get the password in, not the biggest deal in the world, but you're wasting time on something that shouldn't need doing.
But the greatest sin is that the device isn't discoverable via Windows 8 (the only OS I'm using at the moment). In other words, you can't connect it to the wireless network, find it under "devices", and print from it. The only way I've discovered it has been using the included software - not a problem, except the discovery only occurs when you install the software. So after installing the software 3-4 times, I'm sick and tired of it. If there's a better way, Brother didn't make it clear.
Is it a good printer? Well, insofar as it prints, if and when it chooses to, it seems fine. But by no means is it better than a cheap wired printer - I'd rather get a Lantronix XPrint Cloud Server and plug in that, since I have faith that'll work far better than this.
Could I get this up and running? Probably. Will I invest the time and energy to do it? Probably not. Connectivity for this wireless piece of garbage is just a wire away.
Top reviews from other countries
Background : Just moved out of the family house, girlfriend goes to university, we both use the PC
Wireless Setup: Not so easy, I would not recommend doing the wireless setup to someone who doesn't have more than a basic understanding of computers. It took me around 1 hour to setup, but I could see how someone would just give up since I had to go on the company website to find the right drivers and then install them manually then setup the printer manually also. Connecting to the router for me was super easy because I have the 1 touch connect, but any other way if a real pain and actually requires you to plug in the wireless printer to set it up initially. Although this is Microsoft Windows fault rather than Brother. Thankfully you can just buy a printer USB cable and plug it in directly if you don't want to bother. Also you have to install the software on every PC you want to print with. P.S. This is a problem with any wireless printer.
Printer : It can print on both sides! Nice feature I didnt see at first. The cartridge seems smaller than other printers iv'e seen, but a new cartridge is 20$ cheaper too, so might compensate. Paper tray is standard size. Comes with a printer cartridge, good. It is a solid machine and it also looks good. It opens up alot (hinges)
Scanner : Believe it or not, it scans! Not the fastest, but it produces a very sharp image and the flexible hinges allow you to put a pretty big book in there. The software is straight up simple and allows you to open the image in the program you prefer (paint, etc.)
Extras! : You can open this bad boy up alot (different doors in the back), so if the paper ever jams you won't have to jam your hand in too many small places to get to the jam, a nice innovation and quality of life improvement!
TL DR If you aren't comfortable with "figuring out" how to connect the printer wirelessly get the non-wireless version (cheaper) because you might just end up plugging it anyways. Great printer otherwise! Quality is top notch and would recommend to anyone!
The WIFI connection is not stable. Sometimes the connection will be dropped by the router. And I have to restart router to connect the printer. But other devices can reconnect automatically by themselves.
