Top customer reviews
The print quality is mediocre by default. It is much like the color of newspaper photos. Color dithering is done via many visible dots. The result is that all colors are grainy, and gray lines are "dotted lines." Text is crisp, but anything that is not pure CMYK color will be dithered pretty badly.
You can fix the color quality by changing the default to be 600x2400 from 600x600. Then, the quality is good, but printing is slower...sometimes by a little bit and sometimes by a lot. It MAY be that adding memory will speed this up (this is true with some printers.) At 600x2400 resolution the print quality is good.
The ink is matte finish, not glossy like some printers. But it is not chalky feeling. It is pleasant to the touch where there are solid colors.
The printer shipped with old firmware. Updating firmware requires installing Java, which our IT department prohibits because of the security risk. So we will live with old firmware on a brand new printer.
It appears that the printer life is over at 100,000 pages. Consumables required at 100,000 pages include the Fuser Unit, Laser Unit, and PF Kit 1. The cost of these greatly exceeds the cost of the printer. Thus, the printer is trash at 100,000 copies. Even at 50,000 copies you need a new belt kit and PF Kit MP, which are half the price of the printer. So plan on a maximum of 100,000 or perhaps 50,000 pages printed.
Summary: A very noisy printer, shipped with non-current firmware, that produces mediocre graphics, and which has a maximum life of 100,000 pages.
Also, it always seems to develop toner spillage at some point, ruining the quality of your prints. Fortunately, the stuff I was printing did not have to be professional grade looking. When I wanted to print something nice, I used another printer. But this machine has printed 10's of thousands of pages over its lifetime and I'm thankful for its service. I did enjoy it's networking ability, duplex printing, long print life, and relative speed. It rarely got paper jams or other problems besides what I mentioned. However, another issue is you prematurely get a low toner alert. I've had to override that thing more times than I can remember. Now I'm getting the "replace belt" message along with low toner. For the price of the belt and the toner, it would be better to just lay this thing to rest. I would not recommend this particular printer if you need to print high quality color documents. But for the $200 that I paid for it and the way we used it, it was well worth it even for the limited color printing ability.
1. The footprint and weight is very large.
2. The color print quality is not as good as an inkjet printer. It does print faster than an inkjet printer.
3. The brother's wireless printer interface is not as seamless as Air print. It works but, each time it takes multiple steps to set up the the print job.
4. Unless you refill your own toner cartridges, the cost of one full set of toner cartridge replacement approaches the cost of the printer.
5. Most important it stopped working just beyond the warranty period and I had printed less than 1500 pages total. See comments below.
I contacted Brother's about the error problem and was told to take the printer in to the local dealer for repair. That costs $45 to check it out and I was told it was one of three possible part failures. Net, the repairs would cost considerably more than the price of a new printer. I went back to Brothers' support and asked that considering the low usage of the printer, perhaps it was a "lemon" and would they consider helping out with the repairs since the warranty had just expired. The supervisor said no but said I should appeal it to senior management. I wrote a letter to the U.S. General Manager. That was four weeks ago and I have received NO RESPONSE! I have given up and suspect I have just gotten one of the bad printers in their production run. More disrupting is the fact that senior management did not reply to my letter. I will not be a dependent customer to a company where their senior management won't respond to a customer problem.
