First, let me say, that these machines offer a lot of features for less money.. They really do offer a lot and are very easy to use. It's fun to be able to switch to decorative stitches so easily and get nice results..
The problems I had with this machine was a tension problem. After about a year of use, the tension kept screwing up.. We don't have a brother authorized dealer in our area to fix machines, so I would have had to pay Walmart $75 to ship it somewhere to be fixed, and was told I "may" be charged more for the repair. Knowing I might end up paying more in repairs than I paid for the machine, I opted to purchase another Brother machine, because, as I said, I really do like the features of these machines and the ease of use..
Within a year, I started having the same problem with that machine, too.. I have to say, I sew pretty much daily, though, for hours at at time.. I really work machines...
I ended up buying a singer heavy duty (joke) that couldn't even touch the brothers.. So I returned it and purchased a 3rd brother machine... After all this, I read some advice someone left on a feedback about these machines, saying her repair person had told her to set the tension at 2, rather than 4... I read that and thought, NO WAY...I've been sewing for 40 plus years and have always set the tension at 4.. But I got both my older brothers out and tried it.. Low and behold, they both work fine with the tension set at 2!!
I recently upgraded to a Bernina machine (LOVE it), but I was so amazed to realize that the Brother computerized machines have many of the same features that sell a Bernina..The brothers are not built with the same engineering wonders as a Bernina, but I have to give Brother credit for incorporating a lot of features found on expensive machines, for a lot less money.
My updated view of the Brothers have changed.. I think if you are someone who doesn't intend to sew for hours and hours on a daily basis, this type of machine will work wonderfully for you and you'll enjoy it a lot... Probably the most important thing to remember is to clean out the bobbin cartridge on a regular basis (the manual shows you how to do it).. For whatever reason, these machines collect a lot of lint under the bobbin and it affects the stitching incredibly.. Also, change the needle on a regular basis.. Newer needles seem to dull much faster than the needles of yesteryear, and a dull needle really messes with the way these machines work..
There are so many good things about this machine
-button holes are amazingly simple (not so much on the very expensive machines at my school)
overall this machine is great and i have had many sewing machine horror storys that cost 2-3 times this.
