It's an older model, 2007 vintage, I think, and we've considered replacing our units with more current models, even switching to HP, but have not yet found a newer multifunction printer which is comparable so we stick with this, even ordering from refurbishers to replace failed units. The price is right, usually! In our experience a weak point in this model is the paper tray. The back slider is plastic and we find it a bit "delicate", especially when the tray is "slammed" into the unit with some force, which can happen in a busy office. Once the slider fails the printer won't feed properly. We've "fixed" this by taping the slider with duct tape and even inserting an object behind the slider to keep it in place. (We found a short whiteboard marker works just right lol!) Last time we checked, replacement trays were rather expensive so this is our workaround. Have to admit this problem might be entirely avoidable by being gentle inserting the tray. But some office workers have a heavy hand.
Not wireless-capable, which is fine for us since we generally don't use wireless. There may be an add-on device to provide wireless, we haven't ever checked since we don't use wireless!
Bottom line, a reliable multifunction printer which our business has used in multiple locations for years. It's not perfect but certainly our experience indicates it's a reliable capable model.
I have had Brother products in the past and I was always pleased with their performance. This one is no different.
The functions are easy to use and understand. The software, although limited in advanced functionality, is easy to use and easily navigated without the instruction manual for most intermediate to advanced users.
Printing is great. Print jobs are spooled and printed quickly and the quality is just as good as any other monochrome laser printer on the market.
I had issues with the unit after initial installation with the scanning and copying from the automatic feed tray on the top. The scans were slanted. A few minor adjustments to the unit proved successful.
Scanning and copying quality is good enough for the home user. For someone who needs to do photo-realistic scans, then maybe this is not for you.
The unit itself is not too bulky, but it should be placed on a piece of furniture other than your desk, unless you have a really big desk. Structurally, it is a little flimsy in some areas, but not too much. It is fairly solid throughout. I would have liked to have some type of support for the manual feed tray above the main paper tray, but it works okay without one.
The fact that the drum and toner are separate can make this printer not-so-desirable for most home users. In my opinion, I see it is a cost-saver. With other printers, the drum and toner unit are sold as one thing and cost more. For someone like myself, who doesn't print 10,000 pages a month, I can just get the toner cartridge itself when needed.
Today I was scanning a 25-page document through the top feeder to a file and had to print an email also. I was unsure if I could print the email while the scanning was being performed. Well, it did it and it never stopped scanning while printing. That made me smile fervently from ear-to-ear!
I intend to buy 5 of these for my business for personal printers. I am very happy with the Brother MFC-7420 printer! I highly recommend this for the average home user and small business owner!!
I couldn't be more impressed with this unit. I can't find much, if anything at all to criticize about this multi-function. It's extremely intuitive, user-friendly. I had this machine set up in less than 5 minutes and it's been used continuously ever since. There's no learning curve; it just goes to work. That says alot for a machine that does this much.
My machines receive heavy use. In total, I print, scan, and fax a couple hundred times a day, and often print dozens of pages at one sitting. This machine faxes, scans and prints faster than any machine I've owned before. Print and fax quality are excellent. Buttons, trays and internal access are easy to access and understand. It's not the quietest printer because it prints so vigorously, but I'll trade that slight difference for this sharp increase in performance any day. And other printers that make that idling noise for an excessive time in standby to save energy can be annoying. This one is "just right"!
If it's possible for a multi-function printer to have a personality, this machine would receive an "A" in deportment. This has been a very reliable, effective machine!
