I don't think a small business person should have to spend a lot of time being a computer technician or repair man, so easy and reliable are important factors to me. That's why I dumped Windows for MAC and eventually found Brother printers. Installation as a wireless printer on my network was very easy and now the Brother is accessible from any computer or iPad on the network. When it comes time to replace this printer, I won't have to think twice, I will get another Brother MFP.
However, the printer is a bit bulky, so make sure you have enough room to fit it. I ended up putting it on top of my wardrobe because it took too much space elsewhere. For some reason, I like connecting via usb instead of wireless. Maybe it's just a false sense of being a bit faster to send the data, but since I have crevices near my desk, I fit the usb seamlessly into my room design. I don't really have much else to say other than that if you're looking for a good printer at a cheap operating cost as well as initial cost, this is the printer for you. If you're looking for something more capable or something more mobile, then you might want to look at a different printer.
After a day, I switched to USB, connected directly to my iMac. The iMac's printer and scanner sharing is turned on within Mac OS's system preferences. This was required for the software that I installed that allows me to print from my iOS devices -- iPhone, iPad. Note the software is not part of Brother's software - it's a free 3rd party application -- and it took a little tweaking but works great now! Very convenient to print from an iPad or iPhone! Lastly I took a big stack of documents and used the feeder to scan these pages directly to the desktop of my iMac. From the iMac I was able to set the file format for PDF.
- No Ethernet or USB cables provided
- Have to open up the machine to access the Ethernet and USB port
- Unknowns include the life of the ink and the durability over time
- WiFi, Wired Ethernet or USB
- Issue the scan command from the iMac
- Setting static IP was relatively painfree
- Good price
- Smaller than my old MFP
It was painless to setup and was hooked up to my internet network and was able to print from every computer (and smartphone) connected, flawlessly.
I have found out that I have also been saving ink after switching to this printer from a Canon I bought earlier.
My only gripe with this printer is that you load paper from the lower middle in a case which leads to having to take it out if you want to flip the page over and get double sided printing.
There is no duplex printing so you have to do it manually if you want to save paper, but with this printer I am already saving money from ink and hassle from being able to print from anywhere and no wires!
