Works OK, sometimes...
on May 15, 2005
I recently purchased a replacement for this machine. It worked OK on my last computer although it had a bad habit of feeding multiple pages when I was trying to fax. I eventually gave up and switched to scanning my pages one at a time and THEN faxing them. That saved me from having to re-send faxes all the time.
I upgraded my computer to a new Toshiba laptop. I followed Brother's instructions to install the software, but it only got part of the way through the installation and then bailed out. I would have called Brother technical support for help, but they're only available during regular business hours. As a coincidence, I just happen to work those same hours. (Duh!) Unwilling to take time off from work, I tried Brother's on-line tech support, but they just claimed that I didn't have enough RAM. I have 768MB of RAM, thank you very much.
After failing to install, the software did not show up in Add/Remove Programs so I wasn't able to uninstall the software either. With the software half-installed, I got mysterious messages from the installer whenever I rebooted my computer and I was unable to install my new printer's software. Brother's on-line tech support had a utility that was supposed to uninstall their software just in case you run into trouble (which apparently many people do or else such a utility wouldn't exist.) I tried the utility and it didn't help.
So, how did I finally get out of this frustrating mess? I formatted my hard drive, re-installed Windows XP and all of my applications, and then installed the software for my new printer (a Canon MP780, by the way).
In short, if you buy this machine and it works for you, you will probably be reasonably pleased with it considering the price you probably paid for it. If it doesn't work for you, prepare for some major frustration.
