The PTE500 is optimized for professional cabling work, providing single button access to cable wrap, patch panel, even outlet box faceplates. What you won't find built in is pretty pictures of spices, or candy wrappers, etc. However, all of that and more is available through the P-touch editor, which runs fine under Windows 10. There is also a data transfer program that lets you copy spreadsheets from your PC to the PTE500, which can then natively generate repeated / incremented labels for patch panels and even punchdown blocks.
The PTE500 is also very power-agnostic, able to run on a size AA alkaline or rechargeable cells, external power supply, or even an internally rechargeable battery pack (included).
If I go any deeper with the description, I will soon be parroting the sales literature. Suffice it to say that if you are a networking or electrical professional, whether you're doing small or large jobs, the labeller will server extremely well.

Connectivity to a computer for editing labels sets this unit apart from any other portable labeler.
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2018
Purchased this a while back on a lark, a bit excessive I thought just for a labeler. Have had it for a while now and have used it quite a bit. I am really starting to love this thing. I am in IT, install computers, networks, patch panels, POS system, and all sorts of computer stuff. I just keep finding new uses for it. I am now exploring different sizes of tapes and printing company logos on templates. One of the best features is connecting it to your computer, whether via cable or connecting it via Wi-Fi. I can have all my labels ready in advance on big jobs that really need to be labeled. Now everything gets labeled, I mean every item. It helps me create manifests and track serial numbers of high dollar items by using OLE right from a spreadsheet to my labels. It can connect to a database so you can serialize large numbers of like items easily. The connectivity takes a garden variety labeler into the 21st century. It is more than a labeler, it is a label system. It makes anything else seem like something you would buy a 4 year old, imagine having to enter each label one at a time, not being able to put your company logo on labels, not keeping track, etc. This tool allows me to bring the polish up in our work to a new level. Clients are impressed with the neat, clean printing. The additional documentation helps troubleshooting, for instance when you need someone to check a particular device on a large network, I now have it labeled and incorporated into our topologies. I can say is the light on at port A34? Then they can actually go to the rack and check. Little things like that used to create craziness, not being able to find stuff. If you think it is too expensive, you are wrong. It prints the labels one by one or in a chain. Another great feature is the half cut. It will cut the label but leave the back uncut. If you have ever ruined labels trying to separate them from the backing paper you will know what I mean. Worth every penny. Comes in a nice sturdy plastic case you can store extra cartridges in and a charger. Lasts all day on a charge. I can set it down close to the wiring guys and send labels to the machine from my laptop or tablet. It goes to every job now. If you care about your work, and you care about when you come back a couple years later having forgotten everything you did, now you have a lifeline. Document, document document as we say in the industry. So glad I splurged because it was a good purchase. I have always liked Brother Products, good technology, reasonable prices, and good durability. If you are in IT, buck up and buy one you will not regret it. Spend a couple hours getting familiar, and after you have labeled everything in your house to the point of it being stupid, you will be familiar enough with it to take advantage of its more advanced features. I am now adding QR codes to the 1" labels that direct to our website and to seal computers from tampering. You can see I had too much time on my hands today. I have included a couple labels printed earlier, these ones were in the formatting process so they are not perfect, those labels got used today. When I was taking the picture, the camera on my phone read the QR code and pointed to our website so even with its limited resolution, it still can print machine readable 2D QR codes and all the major barcode formats. I haven’t really explored that aspect yet but can see major uses for it in labeling items securely so they cannot be read except by a scanner. If you have read this review till now, I bet you will go out and get one of these because you are probably smarter than I am and can see new uses for this. The label tape is not that expensive and you can get third party product out there even cheaper. I know there is one complaint from a lot of people that it wastes tape. Yes it does waste a certain amount. You can mitigate that by creating all the labels you need in one batch and print them all out at once with only one half inch or so tab. I really don’t care. This thing makes me money by saving me money. The cost of its supplies is pale compared to expenses like gasoline and tolls to go to client sites. Just love this thing.

Works awesome and worth the little extra for the auto cut feature. The computer software if ridiculous, that would be my only complaint.

Awesome label maker. I have made dozens of cable labels and have created numerous custom labels using computer to set up and add custom graphics. Even used it to create Barcode labels for equipment inventory. Nice database of graphics included with the unit and you can import your own graphics. Something for everyone.

This was a great upgrade for my previous 25-year-old P-Touch unit. It is easy to use to make several styles of labels.

Still realizing the stuff this bad boy can do. Does everything I would want it except for putting the label on product itself. Can somebody say upgrade 2.0

My employer uses Brother and Brady units. I went looking for something better than my Dymo Lettratag as it was slow and the tapes did not stick well to everything I needed to label.
I chose brother over brady because I liked the selection of labels for the unit as well as the qwerty. I wont knock the brady the non laminated labels from brady are durable as well.
Though on any of these the consumable can bankrupt you.
The backlight is nice but the keypad is not lit. Which in low light can be a bit of a bother.
It will cut a 1 inch extra chunk if you print a single label. IT HAS TO! It does this for the laminate part of the label. So if you make one label you use an extra inch. If you set the unit on chain cut and make a bunch of labels it only does this once and only requires an extra couple of button pushes at the end, saving you one inch. Other wise the only other way to do this is put it on wide margin which will make the whole label longer using more tape.
The only things I do not like:
• It does not have a enough clipart selection. (I think I can add them but have not looked.)
It is an "industrial machine" but I found a few "industrial" clip parts missing. The old lettratag had way more.
• I also do not like the fact that i fat finger the keys, your mileage may very on this.
• it does not have the tape selection sticker in the box, I had to download an outdated pdf from Brother about labels and print it out. That is the hardest part of figuring out labels for this unit. Brothers website is not great for label selection and Amazon will bury you in selection. Once you find an an actual TZE chart (Not the lze compatible tape chart) it's a walk in the park.
I burned through about 2 cartridges learning this thing. The preview button helps a lot but the smaller fonts can be hard to proof read with this option.
I have used:
•Label Kingdom black on white .5 inch labels
•Brother extra strength adhesive labels in .7 inch and 1 inch
•Brother Flexible in .5 inch size
All labels have worked well. I had one cartridge from label kingdom that had a tiny line on the tape but it is hard to see. Everything sticks as it should when used correctly. I havent stuck one on the siding of the house yet to see how well it handles outside.

Best overall labeller for onsite technicians
Reviewed in Canada on March 31, 2022
This labeler supports the larger label sizes and is great for wire-wrapping cables--especially if you hate label "flags". I've used this for network patch panels, wire wraps of CAT6, electrical cabling, etc. Check out the shrink wrap labels--they're great too. This may be a little pricey for the average home DIYer, but it's indispensable for onsite technicians who want their work to have a professional look.
