The new drum works great. But the original one worked just fine. I had to replace it because printer would not print after it reached the page counts. I found that you can reset the counter, so you can replace it when you really have to. Press 3 and 9 at the same time on your printer to the reset menu to reset it. You can reset belt unit there as well.

Some printers replace their drum each time you replace the toner. This drives up the price of the ink. Brother has opted to keep the drum (actually this is all the drums--one for each color) separate. It's a must have product. Amazon had the best price that I could find on the web. When you need it and your printer stops functioning what are you going to do?--buy one.

There is only 1 reason I use a Brother laser printer. If you search various web sites, there are tricks you can use when the printer tells you it is out of toner. It involves covering up the clear windows on the sides of the cartridge and removing the end cap and resetting the page counter gear. Not hard to do at all. And your reward? You can get a couple hundred more pages out of each cartridge until it really runs dry. When the output starts to look bad, then change the cartridge. With these techniques, I can stretch a standard 1,500 page cartridge to 1,700-2,000 pages without loss of quality.

I thought I was buying an OEM Brother drum unit, because the description of this item showed a photo of the drum sitting on top of an actual Brother box. What I was sent was a "compatible" unit, not a Brother unit. I was duped. This was a clear case of false advertising.

My color laser printer has printed stripes down the side of some pages for a while. Since it wasn't affecting the part I needed, I would just cut the edge off. Eventually it started leaving faded areas and some colors wouldn't print. Eventually, I was able to hobble some copies out by just using black but that stopped, too. I was too afraid to replace this unit for fear I would spend big $$ and then discover something else was wrong. The sum of all the possible parts is considerably more then what I paid for the printer to start with! Anyhow, I finally bit the bullet and bought this drum unit, mainly in an effort to be more environmentally friendly by NOT buying a new printer and discarding this one. The new drum unit completely fixed my problems and I once again have perfect full color prints.

There is nothing snazzy about this drum, but you either buy one or the copier stops...eventually. The warning message came really early. We figured we better have one on hand immediately. We ordered from Amazon for the best price we could find and it came quickly. As it turns out, that was months before we had to install, but better that way.
I can't report how well it works. We have had it for six months but the copier is still running on the old drum.
I know. You are thinking we must not make many copies. Well, I suppose it is only a couple hundred each week, but that is not sitting idle. When it is ready, we are.

Everything seemed fine and worked well until after owning the drum unit for about 50 days I started getting a "replace drum unit" notice on my printer. Unfortunately, it is now 20 days past the refund date, so I appear to be out another $142. I think I've only printed about 800 pages so far on it, so it's definitely not from overuse. Customer service tried to get me the manufacturer's help number, but couldn't find it, so now I've got to either spend time tracking them down or bite the bullet and just buy another one.

The lesson: don't be be penny-wise and pound foolish with toner cartridges--I had taped the black toner cartridge level indicator, so the printer would keep working and I wouldn't have to replace it as quickly, but that led to ruining the original drum unit. So now I will likely waste about $300 trying to save maybe $10 on toner.

Now I'm wondering how much I can rely on online shopping for expensive printer products....

This was by far the cheapest place to buy the drum unit, I shopped around and Amazon not only had every toner I needed, but it also had the drum unit which was brand new and was delivered in only 2 days and saved me over $100 vs going to the local office store. Installed easily and worked perfectly.
