This book has some mature themes in here, so if you like the cheery happily every after with no issues, this is not the book that you want to read.
I'm at a crossroads with this book. I liked some parts of the book, but others I truly disliked. I want to say that for reading this author for the first time, I'm struggling with myself on this review because this book, I feel could have gone better. I'm not going to go into the storyline much, but to say that I think there was too much going on in this book. I think that the author had some great ideas, introduced us to too many characters and put too many plots in the story when she should have only concentrated on the main too of the story. She continued to add extra drama to the storyline and I really don't feel it needed it I felt rushed in the book, you never got to connect with the characters. It jumped a lot to one plot to the next and time moved slow at times then you would be nine months later. It was a up hill battle with me. What is keeping me from giving this book a two, was Roc, and Kenika. They were to be the main characters in this book, even though they seemed shadowed in this book. I really didn't like how they talked in the book either, the pronunciations of things and slang through the story off also, and I couldn't get into it. I think the idea was great in the book but the execution was just off.
I'm going to you everything I liked in the book. The prologue grabbed my attention. It was great. Emotional. Real. Relatable to people. It had me wanting to read about Roc more and more. Roc is another thing that kept me going. He was a strong lead. He had a story, one that was not great, But his story was there, just not developed as much as I had hoped. He was loyal to a fault. When he loved he loved unconditionally. I would have liked to learned more about him in this book. Kenika was a woman that had a past, and it haunted her. She was also the other strong lead in this book. She made something out of herself when she had nothing, and that was something I could respect. Although you get more of her backstory, you just don't get enough. The "secondary characters" in this book were actually pretty good, but what turned me off was that they had as much going on and it was brought into Roc and Kenikas story and that is what was frustrating, I understand writing a little in but there was so much not told in this story and I understand you are writing more books in the series, but when you leave things this unfinished it frustrates the reader, me.
I'm not a writer and I would never disrespect one, so if you want my honesty, this is it. I love reading new authors and finding another to add to my favorites list. Unfortunately, I did not find one here. I wish I did. I really loved the story line and thought it would be great, but in only left me angry and frustrated, because barely one of the plots got taken care of. I probably would not read this book again. I'm going to read the next book in this series and hope that it has tamed down and she concentrates on the main characters and not everyone in the book.
“He wraps his arms around me before pulling my dress up to my waist and palms my ass cheeks, squeezing them firmly, ‘magnificent ass of yours and how good it would’ve looked bent over my desk for a bit of afternoon fun, wouldn’t make you blush?”
4 hot MC stars! This was a pretty steamy read. It was a little different than other MC books I’ve read and that’s not bad at all.
What would you do with a second chance at life?
Would you go back to the same things that you were doing before, or would you embrace that chance and take a new path?
Being the byproduct of a single parent home growing up, I learned quickly that life wasn’t easy and it damn sure wasn’t fair.
I was faced with a choice back then; continue to stand back and watch my mother struggle with working three jobs to pay bills, put food in our stomachs, and clothes on our backs or do something about it. I chose to do something about it and for three years everything was going well, until the day that my life changed forever.
When I met Jethro-Elijah ‘Eli’ Shepard, he told me that just because I wasn’t given a choice in how my life was dealt to me, didn’t mean that I’m not given a chance. He showed me that no matter what people say about you and what life throws your way, that you always have the option to either accept it or defy the odds to become something greater.
My name is Archibald ‘Roc’ Rochester and when I was seventeen, I was given my second chance. How did it turn out? Well, you’ll just have to read my story to find out.
In this book we meet Archibald ‘Roc” and he’s had a rough life from the start. Raised by a single parent, he learned the hard way that life wasn’t fair. Tired of living the way he was he made a choice, and that choice led him to Eli and he taught him that he has a choice to accept the way his life is going or he can beat the odds and become something bigger and better than he already is. This book was a lot of fun to read. It’s different than other books I’ve read with this theme and I’m glad about that!! Great job!!! Ready to read book two now!
