The events behind the film
This film is very good and i enjoy it immensely, especially the vision of the XVIII century France, my country. But you must known it is based on true facts well known in France and much feared about in the Gevaudan region since then.I am french, and all frenchies know this horrible Story, see the photo taken in Gevaudan, France to commemorate the heroic defense of a young girl against the beast. The true facts : a lot of people had been horribly killed in this period of France by something or someone unknown in Gevaudan region, a very savage region and isolated with a lot of wolves.People in this period had spoken about a big beast, a wolf, also linked to the devil !The king of France louis XVI had really sent the royal hunter, as described in the film, and he had killed a big wolf, BUT the crimes had not stopped !!!! the king was very annoyed by these events which made him weak in front of the people. The french revolution of 1789 was about to take place, the people was angry about the king and the nobility. The film shows a conspiration againts the king, i am not sure it was real. Some historians speak now of a serial killer, maybe wearing a wolf's skin...A lot of speculation had been done, but not a single prof, that's the stuff of legend ! there are over films and documents (for TV), books in France about these astonishing events as well.

This was suggested by a friend. Movie ordered for digital playback. No issues.

After watching a couple decades' worth of overly expensive, safe, corporate movies for "modern audiences", here's a movie obviously made in the past and it's like digging up long lost treasure.

"Brotherhood of the Wolf" isn't so much a typical werewolf horror movie as it is an action movie that men will probably enjoy alot more than women. Heaven forbid. Enjoy the rough edges and unexpected situations because you won't find movies like this coming out of today's Hollywood.

I just got this and the disc look fine but the case has a broken piece out of the top on the back side. It's new in the shrink wrap, and I didn't find the plastic piece inside the case, so I'm guessing it happened at the factory. I'm a bit disappointed because I paid full price and expected a pristine product.

Based on a actual occurrence in France involving a wolf. Artistic liberty taken with what actually happened but is very good.

This review is for the single disc Theatrical Cut. Begin with an 18th century costume drama. Add a generous amount of  The Ghost and The Darkness . Combine with equal parts Gothic horror/romance and Asian choppy-socky cinema. Top it off with a dash of  Eyes Wide Shut [Blu-ray ],  Rambo [Blu-ray ],  Jaws (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) , and  Predator (Ultimate Hunter Edition) [Blu-ray ], then stir vigorously. If you can imagine that, you have some conception of what it's like to watch "Brotherhood of the Wolf."

Yes, it's a ludicrous combination of styles and genres, but somehow Christophe Gans made it work. The French can make decent films. Who knew? My expectations were not great, but this movie took me pleasantly by surprise. If "Brotherhood" has one weakness, it's that it can't seem to decide what sort of film it wants to be. For me, watching Indians and French peasants perform kung-fu, while entertaining, required the suspension of a little TOO much disbelief. A/V quality of this 16x9 widescreen transfer was generally strong, but there were several scenes that were overly soft, and/or with poor contrast.

The Theatrical Cut clocks in at 144 minutes; the Director's Cut, 151 minutes; and the three disc special edition, 152 minutes. I haven't seen the latter two, so I can't comment on them. You do get to see all cut scenes on this disc (they're in the Special Features), albeit in rough form...they're not color corrected. I think Gans was wise in his edits. These were some of his comments from the DVD:

"I should point out that these are not scenes made to be included in some hypothetical extended version of the film. They were removed during the editing process for reasons of pacing, or because they introduced character-related inconsistencies. The extended version of the film has been completely remixed and calibrated. It's the DVD version, which is also the 'official' version of the film. I myself liked these scenes, but when you watch the film in its entirety, in the final analysis, they just didn't really fit in." I generally don't like "making of" specials or commentaries anyway, so for me, the Theatrical Cut was the way to go.

The "Deleted Scenes" special feature runs about 40 minutes, but 3/4 of this is Gans' commentary (in French, with English subtitles). They are as follows:

Scene 1: an extended fight sequence from the beginning of the movie. Fronsac participates in the combat.

Scene 2: while searching for the Beast's trail (just before they find the body of the girl), Mani has a bonding moment with a crow.

Scene 3: after Sardis' church sermon (just after Fronsac gives Marianne the sketch), Sardis tries to warn Fronsac against courting her.

Scene 4: After the King's soldiers go off in search of the Beast, Fronsac meets Marianne on a frozen lake, and they have a romantic moment. Then you see Marianne returning home on horseback.

Scenes 5/6: an extended version of the taxidermy sequence. Beauterne asks Fronsac to recommend a good brothel. They go to the House of Madame Tessier. Sylvia reveals to Fronsac the brothel's spy holes, showing how Beauterne is spending his time. It's not pretty. After this, there's about 6 1/2 minute montage of brief, unused shots, including one that reveals a little more of Mani's fate in the catacombs.

In my opinion, the English dubbed audio track was wretched, although I was pleased that Vincent Cassel (Jean-Francois) and Monica Bellucci (Sylvia) dubbed their own voices. I'd go with the English subtitles, which are centered in the lower part of the screen, just edging into the picture. Some have found it annoying, but I didn't mind it. Purists have the option of listening to the French audio with no subtitles whatsoever. Other special features:

Theatrical trailer
Production notes (5 paragraphs, on 5 separate pages)
Cast & Filmmaker bios (Samuel Le Bihan-Fronsac, Vincent Cassel-Jean Francois, Emilie Dequenne-Marianne, Monica Bellucci-Sylvia, Jeremie Renier-Thomas d'Apcher, Mark Dacascos-Mani, Christophe Gans-Director)

Favorite quotes:

Samuel Le Bihan (as Fronsac): "Lies may often appear as truths when they're dressed in Latin."
Mark Dacascos (as Mani): "All women have same color when candle is out."

Can I recommend buying it? Yes, but don't pay more than $20. For those who wish to explore the real history surrounding this movie, I'd recommend two sources:
The Real Wolfman , and  Monsters of the Gévaudan: The Making of a Beast .

I have watched this movie many many times and every time I still enjoy it.

I just recently bought this newer director's cut release. It is loaded with extras and bonus scenes replaced into the film that are new and interesting to me.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of the first movies to deal with the French legend of the Beast of Gévaudan. Mind you, to people who have studied the Beast this is not an exact portrayal of what people said happened, but it is a very fun and beautiful film overall.

This story takes place in the French countryside during the 1760's. It has to do with a large creature that is attacking and killing people seemingly at will. This creature is rumored to be a wolf, but no matter how many wolves they hunt, the creature still attacks. Not only that, but the killing seems to be uncharacteristic of a wolf, not to mention the dead show that they were attacked by a much larger creature. Rumors fly and conspiracies mount as the royal taxidermist and naturalist is sent to investigate this beast. Along with his American Indian blood brother Mani, he searches and digs for the truth among rumors and religious fear trying to stop him the entire way. Finally in the end we learn the secrets that the beast carries with it along with the people involved in an attempt to bring down the Catholic Church with their plots.

Overall I love the story. It is complex and fun, somewhat of a stretch of reality, but it holds up well. The movie is a bit strange in that this American Indian Shaman that comes to France has some weird exotic martial arts that come forward in a few kung-fu style fight scenes. It is a bit out of place, but wonderfully directed and choreographed. The real gem of this film are the overall visuals and details. Every scene has such rich backgrounds and skies, along with some beautifully created sets in the forest. All this shadows in the look of the actual beast itself. It takes awhile into the film before you even get your first glance at it, but it is nothing but gnarly looking. Although the beast has no sense of reality in it at all, the looks or it are just down right scary. I do not think that I have seen a freaker/eye-catching baddie in a film lately, except maybe the Baby-Eater in Pan's Labyrinth.

Overall, this is one of my favorite movies to put on when I am sitting around the house and want to be entertained. It is not for everyone though. Some scenes are a violent and there is a bit of sex and nudity throughout the film, so beware. It is not intended for children. Also, as a warning, the movie is naturally in French but the DVD has an English track if you cannot stand reading subtitles.

Definitely worth the price of the DVD. I would have paid double for it, so I found it to be a steal.

I reckon I am looking for something different in movies these days. I saw the movie in the theater when it came out and loved it then.
I purchased it because I love the sound of Émilie Dequenne's voice, so, get the one with English sub titles, not the one with English voice overs. It DOES make a difference to the entire feel of the movie. The emotions don't seem as real with the voice overs.

It took me years to find this movie, i had seen it as a kid years ago and remembered it. Finally found it on prime! Great period piece and a scary horror story. Very atmospheric and slightly dark as only the French can do! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is one of my favourite French movies along with B-13. Need a great movie outside North America, this is it.
The transfer picture and sound are perfect, with the only drawback being the special effects looking dated from the transfer. No issue with playback.
Highly recommend for fans of this movie.
