Don't read this series. In fact, don't read any of her books. Well, the earlier Carhart series might be OK. She was only finding her feet and her voice in those. But absolutely DO NOT read Courtney Milan's later works, once she has hit her stride.
If you do, you will - after binge-reading everything she has written - continue on to the other romance novels recommended by NPR readers, and be left to gnash your teeth at unhealthy relationships, self-absorbed, whiny characters, and character motivations that don't make sense.
Yes, all these flaws were present in romance novels before you read Courtney Milan's works, but you wouldn't have seen a good example of books that are intelligent, sexy, funny, had well-drawn characters, tangible plots, and conflict that relies on external sources rather than relying on the angsting of characters whose heads are firmly planted well up their lower digestive tracts.
Stay away. It's the only way you won't be even more disappointed in the vast majority of romance novels.
This box set was an excellent purchase. My favorites were Talk Sweetly to me, The Countess Conspiracy, and The Governess Affair, all of which I would give 5 stars. The Countess Conspiracy and Talk Sweetly to Me are as close to perfect romances as I may have ever read.
I would give 4.5 stars to The Suffragette Scandal and The Heiress Effect, both were wonderfully engaging and sweet and very hard to put down.
The Duchess War receives 4 stars. I loved the character Minnie to death. I required some convincing about Robert. It was a very good book, just not as mind-blowingly awesome as the rest in the series.
Buy this box set. These books are beyond dope. I literally cannot read Courtney Milan when I have any kind of obligations in my life. I have to just set aside basically the whole day to complete one of her books because when I'm in the middle of one, I'm useless for everything else.
