New York Times Book Club Pick!

"Excellent." --San Francisco Chronicle

"Brotopia is more than a business book. Silicon Valley holds extraordinary power over our present lives as well as whatever utopia (or nightmare) might come next." --New York Times

Silicon Valley is a modern utopia where anyone can change the world. Unless you're a woman.

For women in tech, Silicon Valley is not a fantasyland of unicorns, virtual reality rainbows, and 3D-printed lollipops, where millions of dollars grow on trees. It's a "Brotopia," where men hold all the cards and make all the rules. Vastly outnumbered, women face toxic workplaces rife with discrimination and sexual harassment, where investors take meetings in hot tubs and network at sex parties.

In this powerful exposé, Bloomberg TV journalist Emily Chang reveals how Silicon Valley got so sexist despite its utopian ideals, why bro culture endures despite decades of companies claiming the moral high ground (Don't Be Evil! Connect the World!)--and how women are finally starting to speak out and fight back.

Drawing on her deep network of Silicon Valley insiders, Chang opens the boardroom doors of male-dominated venture capital firms like Kleiner Perkins, the subject of Ellen Pao's high-profile gender discrimination lawsuit, and Sequoia, where a partner once famously said they "won't lower their standards" just to hire women. Interviews with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, and former Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer--who got their start at Google, where just one in five engineers is a woman--reveal just how hard it is to crack the Silicon Ceiling. And Chang shows how women such as former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, entrepreneur Niniane Wang, and game developer Brianna Wu, have risked their careers and sometimes their lives to pave a way for other women.

Silicon Valley's aggressive, misogynistic, work-at-all costs culture has shut women out of the greatest wealth creation in the history of the world. It's time to break up the boys' club. Emily Chang shows us how to fix this toxic culture--to bring down Brotopia, once and for all.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[Chang] is clearly engaged with and often incensed by her subject, and the best parts of Brotopia are those moments when she actively resists the 'it's all good' ethos of the Bay Area and cuts down chauvinism with the disdain it deserves." New York Times

"
Brotopia goes far beyond the salacious to offer an important examination of why the technology industry is so dominated by men—and how women are pushing back." Financial Times

"When reading
Brotopia, it's easy to envision it as a film…. Women who have triumphed in tech despite the odds…could be the film's heroines, and so would the young girls learning how to code despite it all." The Verge

"…Chang's scrutiny breaks open a wide doorway, allowing fresh ideas about a tainted industry to circulate and spark discussions."
Kirkus Review

The dirty little secrets of Silicon Valley masterfully exposed.
Two enthusiastic thumbs up for Emily Chang’s (2018), Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys Club in Silicon Valley Penguin Random House, New York NY. When I first read this book in early 2019, I was shocked. Emily Chang had thoroughly researched and then masterfully written a book about the dirty little secrets of Silicon Valley. I was shocked because I have been an active player in the Silicon Valley ecosystem since 1990, and I was clueless about most of the problems that she uncovered. Chang explored how the PayPal Mafia’s idea of meritocracy (people like us) had a significant impact on Silicon Valley culture, making it difficult for women to get onto and move up the ladder of meritocracy. She also revealed that the earnest efforts of Google to recruit, retain and promote women was far from an easy task. Her chapter about the role of venture capitalists showed how male VCs’ reluctance to fund women-led ventures has had a negative effect on the rise of women entrepreneurs. There is also a lot of information about sexual harassment on the part of male founders and VCs. This book should be required reading for anyone in the Silicon Valley ecosystem, and anyone curious about Silicon Valley.I bought a dozen copies of the book to give to men and women I know are rising stars - global entrepreneurial leaders...

I read Brotopia on the recommendation of a friend and got so much out of it! The book gives fascinating insights into the entire tech industry as well as the specific culture of Silicon Valley and why women have struggled to find equity in that industry. Highly recommend!

Brotopia might be the most important and accessible book ever written on sexism in the workplace — how it operates and why it matters to EVERYONE. I’m having to stop to highlight quotes and take notes on nearly every page. In my experience, no psychologist, sociologist, or author of any kind has done such a good job explaining these dynamics. I want everyone I know to read this.

Emily Chang is a hero. Because she is passionate about has been reporting on technology for so long, she discovered how important it was to write this book. Urgently. And because she knew that by writing this honest book based on excellent investigative reporting, she’s becoming a target for trolls and other bullies who don’t want this reality to be shared so widely, she is a hero.

Also, I have to say: her descriptions line up perfectly with my experiences in this sector. And her understanding of prejudice is supported by the most current social science. She is not exaggerating. If anything, she might be erring on the side of under-reporting how bad it is.

Thank you, Emily.

Five stars? Nah!!! More like 10 stars!!! No, 100 stars!!! 1000 stars!!!

I finally bought the book and I am so proud of myself! I knew when it went viral online, but got caught up in work and life and somehow forgot to grab a copy. Then one fateful day, a few days ago, I couldn't stop thinking about this important book, so I bought it 😊

This topic should never be allowed to grow old because the problem still exists.

I watched a lot of her interviews on the book and even though her findings are considered shocking, I dare say that the situation is even darker than we think...

I intend on explaining what I mean by saying the situation is a lot darker in a book review of this novel.

There are two books ahead of this novel in my reading list. But once I am done reading them, I intend to devour this book and then post a befitting review on my website.

Thanks for this novel, Emily.

I purchased the book the first day it was available. For the most part, the book read like articles from the Metro News, in it got you some information but left out to many details as in 3rd person perspective. The third person is the most common point of view used in fiction writing and is the traditional form for academic writing. There was a lot of “he,” “she,” or “it” when referring to a person, place, thing, or idea. I personally know many of the people " Involved". My wife and I operated at Lifestyle party in San Jose for a dozen years. They were our members, and yes, they had sex with each other. What was not discussed was who is doing what to whom, we were not the place for that kind of discussions. We asked all those who attended to bring two bottles of good wine to share, we saw a lot of the under $10,00 bottles of wine, as in the cheap stuff. Mind you sitting in our driveway were Ferrari's, Porches, Vipers, etc. For people of the Valley to engage in sexual play as they did at our party, they have to feel very safe, what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors. Our Membership in San Jose was about 10,000 and included everyone from all walks of life.

I have spent 35 years investing in technology in Silicon Valley. I stopped managing a fund a few years ago because the culture of the Valley was changing in ways that made me very uncomfortable.

Here's the thing. I'm a white male. I have had a very successful career. And yet, the Valley's culture made me very uncomfortable. I could not imagine how awful it was for women in Silicon Valley. Then I read "Brotopia." Now I know. The culture of Silicon Valley is not just entitled. It has an element of creepiness. And horrific misogyny. Not at every company. Not at every VC firm. But at way too many.

Here's another thing. The problem is not limited to Silicon Valley. Just watch cable news.

Here's a third thing. Roughly 2/3 of our economy comes from consumer spending. Women make the decisions on 70-80% of that spending. Excluding women from the highest levels of our economy is every bit as insane on economic grounds as it is on moral grounds.

Emily Chang has written a classic. Please read it now.

A thoughtful, important, and incredibly timely book. I loved how the author took on the issue of gender in Silicon Valley from so many different angles - from the history of women in computing to female entrepreneurs to VCs/fundraising and culture issues. It made for a fast and fun read while at the same time being informative and grounded in diligent research and reporting. Ms Chang's background as a journalist shines in her ability to tell sides of this story never shared before and elevating new voices and perspectives. This is a nuanced issue without one single cause or solution, and Brotopia is a critical contribution to the conversation on how Silicon Valley can be a more inclusive place and truly live up to its egalitarian ideals.

A thorough look at a troubling industry, especially for women. The author’s knowledge of the history of the industry showed how some of the most egregious problems got their start, and became standard. A must read for anyone in this industry, and anyone concerned about respecting the real intellectual strengths of women, and our (women’s) right to work in any discipline.

If you are a woman and you work somewhere — in any industry or any field — you are no stranger to the series of challenges that you face every day. From not being taken seriously to being mistreated, every day is as good as walking through hell fire. At a time when sexism, biases and harassment, Emily Chang’s Brotopia gives you hope that you are not alone. Yes it walks you through the dark side of the golden valley, but in it lie some very important messages and thoughts that give you hope that someday/one day things will change. Brotopia is both a ray of hope and a lesson. It is a book that every working woman would relate to. Three cheers for the author!!!
