1: thick heavy duty yet buttery soft leather
2: great stitching throughout
3: simple, beautiful design; a replica of the 1800s pony express mailbag
4: smells wonderful! Just like a leather bag ought to
5: single main compartment with a divider for my laptop (love the simplicity!) and zipped outer pocket for easy access of valuables eg wallet/ money/ keys etc. All kept safe with a flap secured with brass latch
6: leather straps come with a padded shoulder part for comfort
7: holds its shape well when carried- doesn't slouch when carried so your stuff won't get jumbled up inside
8: handy top handle if you don't want to use the straps
9: beautiful tanned color. Scratches seem to fade with a little Vaseline rubbed in.
10: perfect for commuting to work and will double up as an overnight bag too- certainly passed my test as a carry-on bag on flights
11: will probably outlive me! I'm quite rough with my work-bags and so far this mailbag looks better with each passing day :)
You may not like this bag if:
1: you like lots of compartments
2: it's a heavy bag. I'm 5'5" weighing 112lbs and if you really stuff it, your shoulders will ache (I don't stuff mine and use it for work- iPad, phone, wallet, keys, couple of A4 notebooks, a novel, adapters, some makeup, not that bad weight-wise)
3: you're petite- mainly due to its size and weight
4: it doesn't have any metal feet to protect the base
Overall, this is a lovely beautiful messenger bag- perfect for work/ commuting/ overnight stays. Buy it- you won't regret it!
Its only drawback for some people would be its weight ( a fraction short of 5 lbs, according to my bathroom scales) but if you know that before you buy it you can hardly complain. It weighs so much because of the thickness of the hides it's made from (double thickness front and back). It'll last forever. The tanning process leaves it quite susceptible to scrapes and scuffs, which to my mind is a decided plus, as it's starting to get that well-used (and loved) look after only a few weeks. The Pony Express clasp is an added bonus - it works well, but the bragging rights are enormous.
It accommodates my 17" laptop easily, if the side straps are loosened to allow the pleated sides to expand a little. I'm pretty sure that it would take my desktop, too, at a pinch. Perhaps not the monitor. It's true it doesn't have much in the way of interior compartmentalization, but if you want to keep your things organized buy something like a Cocoon GRID-IT Organizer http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002T0HRVY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER.
Handle and shoulder strap are comfortable, and like everything else look strong enough to last forever.
I think I'm going to have to change my Will to specify which lucky descendant will inherit it. Fascinating to speculate what sort of fancy gear it will be toting around a hundred years from now.
